Choosing Next Build

I'm really pleased with my first build - TT-02d R32 GTR and will use it often because I really like it.

I am aware that it doesn't handle exceptionally well and that there are many ways to improve it:

  • Tamiya hop-ups
  • Third party suspension kits
  • Chassis kits
  • etc etc

However, I think I would like to start a new build from a "better" start point. I like road racing - Racing by Post because there are no clubs near me and I have a reasonable place to do it.

I've been considering at three Tamiya chassis:

  • XV-02RS Pro (current favourite)
  • XM-01 Pro
  • TA-08 Pro

Watching the XV-02 build by @svenb I see that once again, many upgrades are being fitted - is there a better equipped chassis to begin with?

I won't say buget isn't a barrier, but I'd like to see what options are available at all levels - maybe even other makes :ph34r:

Big question - what other options might there be? What's your preference/suggestion and why?

If you have a relatively smooth running surface you might do well with a stock M07 or M08. These smaller M chassis cars cope well with the small courses in racing by post.

 

I don't take part often, but when I do, my M Chassis cars have been better than my full size touring cars. Just my experience however.

 

XM01 is M chassis size, but is twice the price of an M07. The only thing is that the M07 in particular is quite hard to get hold of at the moment apart from ebay or shipped from Hong Kong or Japan. Might have more luck with M08.

XV-02. You will.be totally happy with stock version. Maybe few not very expensive Hop Ups, to improve few points.

You will be surprised, how much better in terms of quality is XV-02 compared to TT-02.

You can also think about XV-01 which is much cheaper, but at the same time it is quite old model.

TA-08 is not something you want to use on dirty asphalt.

XM-01 is M series, so you need different bodies than for TT/XV series.

Are M07 and/or M08 usable on dirty asphalt? I have the latter, with small tires but those can be changed of course if that makes a sufficient difference.

TA-08 has open belt, spur and pinion. I think dirt and small rocks will kill drivetrain really fast.

Dirty yes, really bumpy, maybe not as they're really designed for racing.

You can put full-size Touring car rims and tyres on them (so long as the body allows) which can also help.

Might I throw another suggestion out there in the form of the TC-01?

Similar grade to the M-07/08, TA and TB series cars with reinforced plastics, alloy motor mount, bearings, etc included, enclosed gearboxes suitable for dirty asphalt, a fun build with an interesting and effective suspension layout that can be set plenty high enough for bumpy surfaces, no hop-ups needed from the box (although plenty are available if you like bling) and with the CLK GTR bodyshell, it is eligible for both RBP and ERBP entry. 

I held off buying one when they were only available with the Formula E bodyshell, but jumped on one when the CLK GTR version came out, and am very glad I did!

Lovely piece of kit, but not ideal for dirty bumpy ground. Awesome on an indoor carpet track though!

If you like RBP I would suggest a FWD M-chassis. I am not a racer, but I have done a few rounds of RBP by now and when things got started for me was when I improved throtle control and started doing one input at the time. FWD is brilliant for learning that. Too hard on the brakes you go straight ahead. You brake while turning in you loose the line. Too hard on the throtle while exiting you have wheelspin.

In the time and age of today that means the M-07 on 60D tyres. Based on my experience with the siebling M-08 it works out of the box and would only require a body, better tyres and the two largest pinions you can fit. With a Torque tuned and a Hobbywing 1060 you are set. Besides it is something to grow with, so when you want to evolve into LiPo and brushless it can do that as well. You'll have loads of fun and joy with it and it will be a car you will keep coming back to.  My heavily hop upped M-05 was the one that helped me improve starting in 2022 after running buggies before that. I ran it yesterday and it improved it's lapcount.

 

After that it is time for the XV-02 RS Pro, XM-01 Pro or the outsider TurnipJF is suggesting.

What motor/ESC combo would be recommended (using a 2sLiPo)? My preferred supplier is recommending Core 15T Silver Can Brushed 540 Motor/Hobbywing Quicrun 1060 Brushed SBEC Waterproof 60A

When building it as a Formula E, the space available under the bodyshell for electronics is very limited, so a small brushed ESC with four relatively thin cables and a brushed motor such as those recommended by your supplier is a good suggestion. They would fit the car built exactly according to the standard manual steps. 

However with the CLK GTR bodyshell there is far more space available, and if you look in the back pages of the manual you'll see that the kit comes with two additional mounting platforms for electronics which can be used with this shell, so you can run almost any electronics you like. I run a Hobbywing 10BL60 ESC and Orion 13.5t brushless motor on 2S LiPo in mine. 

The ESC is of similar size to the one your supplier recommends, but it has five thick cables, a sensor cable and a fan on top. Because I quite like the looks of the chassis with the electronics tucked away, I fitted it in the stock location but moved the fan from the top to the side to clear the shock mount and routed the cables back beside the servo and across the chassis in front of the spur gear rather than under the front propshaft which is where the fan ended up. However had I wanted to, I could have used one of the supplied additional platforms to mount it or pretty much any other ESC beside the servo, routing the cables however I wished. The CLK GTR bodyshell makes the kit far easier to equip with electronics compared to the Formula E version.

They handle dirty asphalt without issue, especially the M-08 which doesn't have an opening in the underside to access the pinion, so you don't need to worry about the cover coming off and letting dirt in.

However being smaller and lighter than 1/10 touring cars, I find that bumpy or uneven terrain throws them off course more easily. Mine deliver excellent RBP lap counts on the smooth tarmac where I usually run them, but the lap count drops off quite steeply if the surface gets bumpy. My touring cars on the other hand are far less affected.

Thank you for the additional input - I am on the verge of ordering this with a similar set up as you suggested because I might be tempted to try the ERBP :D

It looks like a big step up from the TT02 in terms of just about everything - especially the electrics which will be a challenge, at least for me!

This really appeals to me - I'm a bit of an engineering snob (though not an engineer!). I love something engineered so well and using such good looking parts & materials.

It is indeed a big step up from a TT-02 in petty much every way. Materials, part quality and fitment, adjustability and setup options...  I'm sure you won't be disappointed if you get one.

And if you hit any challenges, the forum is but a few clicks away. Several of us have built them, and we'd be more than happy to help. 😀

So I decided on the TC-01 with the CLK body. I'm a bit nervous about squeezing all the electrics in, and handling a car with a powerful brushless motor so settled on a brushed motor/ESC:

LRP V10 Spec6 - 17 x 2 

Hobbywing Quicrun 1060 Brushed SBEC Waterproof 60A ESC

Also ordered some titanium hex screws

Congrats with the decition. This is a brushed motor BTW, but nevertheless still plenty of power.

With a 17 double on 2S LiPo, it will be no slouch.

What servo are you going for? (Bearing in mind that the kit is designed to take a low profile one.)

Have been a fan ever since they released the mini M18 touring car....only micro car ive had that felt much larger than it actually was...too bad the micro scene died out. 

But check out their newest offering.... those upper a-arms are a thing of beauty! But yeah they need to make a rally car version

That is a superb piece of kit, and their web page is awesome!

I would so like one of these, but I'll do the TC-01 first and improve my building/driving skills while looking for somewhere to race indoors :lol:
