I'm going to hazard a guess and say the small rock-hard tires Tamiya supplies in the CC02 kit aren't the most effective on the trails. I found the old CC01 chassis I had very limited on the rocks and roots that tend to proliferate on the hiking trails around me. The CC02 chassis seems much more capable. I'm debating between going all-out with something large and definitely capable like @Frog Jumper's CC02 set-up or just going mildly bigger by adding something affordable like slightly larger High Lift tires. How much tire does a CC02 need to be capable on rougher terrain? This doesn't extend into rock crawling specifically as I have CR01 for those duties.

If you want to stay scale-ish with size, I'd suggest something like RC4WD Dirt Grabbers. Softer compound, a little taller and narower than high lift tires, and nice scale tread design. They work really well on my ECX Barrage, which is close to the CC02 in size and weight.

I have injora crawler tyres on mine.

They're softer and not to expensive.

I'd go with Injora myself, or even "off-brand" tires/wheels since even off-brand crawler wheels/tires aren't half bad.

For a while I had an assortment of CC-01/CC-02 type wheels and tires. They were okay for rally-type driving but way too hard for trail use.

So I've had good luck with both the PitBull RockBeast 1.55 tires and 1.9 tires.  The 1.55s are 95mm and the 1.9s are 115mm.  Being the bigger tire, the 1.9 is more capable bc of the extra lift it provides.  But the 1.55 looks better in terms of size.  If I had to do it all over again, I might have chosen these:  https://www.amainhobbies.com/jconcepts-tusk-1.9-all-terrain-crawler-tires-2-4.19-class-1-green-jco407702/p1552820?v=1539802
