TD2 / TD4 brushless motor options?

Recommended Posts

So, looking at the manuals for these two buggies, it seems that they are designed with Tamiya/Speed Passion motors in mind, with their cables connecting at the rear.

However I haven't seen many people complain about fitting their motors into these buggies. Is it not an issue using side tab brushless motors after all? Or is there a modification known to everyone but me that allows them to fit? Or do only certain motors fit and others don't? All info (and photos) appreciated!

I started building my td4 ordered an hobbywing 4000kv brushless motor for it with side tab wires, this motor do not fit , then I took out a 3800kv castle motor from my BBX that has the wires on the side tab that are soldered and the tab is a bit  lower then the hobbywing motor ,I thought that wil fit , but that motor also do not fit, it is a bit of a pain to find a brushless  motor for it, the best is to find a motor with the wires on the rear of the can.

Lucky I found a Carson brushless motor on sale in a local hobbyshop that one has the wires on the rear,  like tamiya and speed passion brushless motors.

I have only tried the TBLM, which is of course an easy to fit option, but now we don't have the old PJ cheap supply, and if any car I've got could take something faster it's this one. So watching with interest....

A friend of mine installed a HW Quicrun 10.5t in his TD4. Not the most elegant thing but works. Looks like this:

Hobbywing G3s fit, apparently, but they are £100 motors.

Speed Passion 4.5t is still available new…

The Tamiya 10.5 is mostly quick enough with some boost timing.

I have two TD4’s. The one I race have a Castle 4600 kv motor. It is a really tight squeeze, but it is possible. The other have a Tamiya brushless tblm02 motor, and it was plug and play.

Bummer, I have bought a Justock 10.5 to go in my TD2 and hadn't even seen this issue coming.

Back to the drawing board <_<

I have a 10.5t Speed Passion ready to go into my TD2, but if I'm not mistaken, the TD4 needs a little more oomph?

(Probably not 4.5t of oomph though...)

It’s a weighty chassis so 4.5 with the timing at zero isn’t as mad as it sounds.

with the 10.5 it needs much boost to get enough punch 🥊 but it’s certainly usable

Is that in a TD4 or TD2?

On 2S I find the Tamiya 10.5t with the kits 17t pinion strong and fast enough in my TD4. However, I am pretty sure your 10.5t could handle even a 20t pinion with ease.

So if a 10.5t can be made to work in a TD4 with appropriate timing, boost, gearing, etc, can the same be said of a 13.5t in a TD2?

By doing some motor swaps in my current fleet, I can free up a Speed Passion 13.5t, 10.5t and/or 4.5t.

Should I put the 4.5t in the TD4 and 10.5t in the TD2?

Or boost/time/gear them more aggressively, put the 10.5t in the TD4 and the 13.5t in the TD2?

At the moment I am leaning toward the second plan, as the ball diff in my Group C didn't last long on 4.5t so I am hesitant to put it in anything else with a ball diff, and I don't race regularly anymore - I just want to be able to take the cars to the Tamiya Junkies meets at Robin Hood Raceway and not be embarrassingly off the pace.

Modern 13.5 would easily be quick enough in the TD2 - again you might need a good bit of advanced timing with a decent speedo but I’ve seen people go properly rapid on a 17.5 in a light 2wd

A little late to the discussion, but my Turnigy Trackstar needed the tabs bent/filed to fit with the stock pinion. I think the stock pinion is right near the middle of the adjustment if I remember correctly - going higher or lower on the pinion might slide the motor to one side or the other and give some room to align a motor with several mounting options to fit 'well'.
