Recommended Posts

What would one use as a backing colour for Tamiya TS20 metallic green to give the best results?

Is it definitely a TS paint rather than a PS?

Just checked and PS20 is red - you wouldnt normally use the TS paint range on a lexan RC body, this is what the PS type paints were developed for - any reason for not using PS-17?

It is not going on a lexan body, it's for another project.

Then it is primer you are looking for not backing. Tamiya light gray primer will work.

You could try a solid green as the undercoat

Primer is for adhesion, a backing colour gives the top colour the effect you're after. You can get away with using the primer as the backing but silver is what you need for the proper backing for a metallic.

The plan is to do my monster beetle shell in metallic green (TS20).I have sprayed my MF01X Suzuki Jimny metallic green (PS17) I have made a mess of several paint jobs and I want this one to be spot on. Just asking some advice on how to get the best result. I do know the difference between TS & PS paints.

Grey primer, a few good even coats of the metallic green and lay the last coat on a little bit thicker for that shine or use a good clear coat. Sometimes a wet sand and polish is necessary, but that depends on how high of quality you want to go.

Backing color is absolutely necessary to achieve the best results with metallic. You can test with several different colors of primer or paint to see how it changes the final color. Usually silver, and gold are the most popular base coats for metallic.

I found a brand new can of candy lime whilst cleaning out my man cave today. I'm thinking this one will look better. 🤔
