I've started getting back into RC stuff recently. One thing I always wanted as a kid was a Tamiya monster truck. I've been looking around and I see that while the Super Clod is quite a bit cheaper than a TXT-2, it seems like I would need to spend a fair bit upgrading the Clod to what the TXT-2 is out of the box. It looks like all I would need to do to the TXT-2 is Clod wheels and tires and adapters and maybe upgrade the dampers.

What's the general consensus? I'm leaning towards the TXT-2 because it seems like the price difference between it and upgrading a Clod would be minimal.

edit - I've also looked at the Juggernaut 2 but it's about double the price of the TXT-2 and, from what I've read, the TXT-2 has softer suspension so it's less bouncy and handles a bit better.

TXT-2 is discontinued afaik. You might consider buying 2 from existing stock or picking up a beater (or two) from ebay for parts if you go that route and want to run long-term.

The budgets people spend on Super Clods to make them perform is eye watering. It's not RC Tank or RC Semi crazy but... it's up there.

Hopefully others will chime in feedback specific to the models. My TXT-1 sits on the shelf and my Clod is still in the box. Personally, I push people towards the Lunchboxes and GF-01s (though the Heavy Dump appears discontinued too now :().

Whichever route you go, you are now contractually obligated to post build pics on the forum :D.

TXT-2 is a good truck out of the box. Here's a vid' where you can see it running almost "stock" (2 Sport Tuned & 4 shocks instead of 8, I like very soft suspensions): link

If you can live with the stock look, aka the servo mounts/bumpers "in front" of axles, the tires and the body-shell, then it's nice, because you don't need to spend a lot of money...

It could be another story if you want to see the beautiful axles (you'll need a "behind the axle" mounting system, strong servos), change tires (around 100 bucks to have 2.6 inches complete "Monster-Truckish" wheels), and/or change the body. Could not speak about brushless & LiPo thingies, but with "hot" brushed motors, you may need a fan for the ESC... If you want a solid steering, you'll need strong servos, followed by a strong ESC with a good BEC system...

That's the kind of money pit you may fall in, just like me :D (but I certainly don't regret it!!)

Cannot compare to a Clod as I don't have one, but I'm craving for a re-release of a BullHead. How cool would be a BullHead Purple Edition. Or orange. Or red. Or black. Or green. One day I'll have one :)

I was looking at the TXT-2 or Clod simply for how over the top they both are with dual motors and 4 wheel steering. I thought that was the coolest thing when I was a kid.

This is where I am right now. I don't mind spending more for a TXT-2 since it's a better package out of the box. I think the only issue that when I got to look up parts, like behind the axle servo mounts, they're usually discontinued.

I don't have experience with the TXT-2, but I do know of the huge aftermarket support for the Clodbuster. You can pretty much build a Clodbuster without starting with a Clodbuster just using aftermarket parts, lol. The TXT-2 is a closer representation to a modern monster truck, but yet I don't know if parts support will be an issue. Tamiya has temporarily discontinued products in the past, I don't know if that is the case with the TXT-2 or if it's done for good, or if we should be expecting something new, but you can see that these factors will make your decision harder... sorry.

If it were my decision, I would find a used but clean Clod, then modify it with axle mounted steering servos and do some chassis and suspension modifications. I do see the attractiveness of the TXT-2 and TXT-1, but I can't justify the expensive price IMO.

Parts in general for a lot of the Tamiya kits are hard to come by. Whichever route I take, I'll most likely buy a NIB kit as I really enjoy the assembly process.

I may be late ... but ...

I drove the Clod in the 80ies, and the Juggernaut 2 and TXT-1 in the early 2000s. From my experience they're all great and fun to drive. The advantage of the Clod is that it is a bit more lightweight in comparison to the other two. Which made it a blast to drive on firm snow. It literally "floats" on top, at least in stock condition. I guess the TXT-2 may be as great too, it's just the silly name and the ugly body shell that prevented me from getting one. 😂 Sorry I must admit that I am quite conventional when it comes to monster truck optics. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Some impressions ... long time ago:
