10BL120 in XV-01

Recommended Posts

I'm about to mount the electronics into the XV-01 nr 2 for gravel and winter running. Since I had an idea that it could be smart beeing able to use NiHm I settled for the 10BL120. Yes,  that's overkill for a 17,5t,  but no shops here has the 10BL60.

I am after pics of this ESC installed for inspiration. I know @BuggyDad has one in his, so would be happy for your response hereB)

To be able to close the compartment the ESC has to be mounted in this position. It is better for the sensor cable I have  (300mm) if I mounted the ESC the other way, but then it would be even tighter with the cables, when also the receiver and capacitors arr going in.

I am thinking about changing the cables dfor 14 AWG, since I have to extend them anyway to make it all the way to the motor.

So let the pics and ideas flow,  so I can get this up and running on Saturday:)

Looking forward for this!

I started to think about the same few days ago...

Ah no, I have the 10BL60 in mine. In the same position as yours there. Are you using the stock compartment cover? I got a 3d print of a slightly bigger one and it made life easier, but it did also fit with the stock one before. Or, how about taking the fan off and mounting it on the outside of the box if things are tight? Would that enable you to mount the ESC forward to enable your preferred cable runs?

I think, but I don't have it with me to confirm, I might also have replaced with 14AWG wire. And mine's running a 10.5t.

Wonder if you'd even need the fan with a 17.5. Unless you go full on turbo timing or something.

I am gonna use the stock cover. It's gonna be ran during winter,  so needs to be as watertight as possible. It was tight with the XR10 Justock in the other XV-01. The ESC is in the same spot there,  but because of the significantly smaller footprint it is turned 90 degrees and the cables are pointing towards the front.

The fan is going off for the winter anyway. If I'll need one when it gets warmer I think I will just mount a 30mm fan on the outside. And put the in front of the compartment.

Thanks for the inputs and ideas. I think I am gonna do it like this.

- Mount the ESC in front of the compartment without the fan.

- Swap to 14 AWG motor cables.

This was supposed to be a walk in the park,  but turns out to be a bit more work. It's doable and if I did not care about looks it's more or less a question of how much I will hack it. Since the car is super nice and in excellent condition (and now better) I am giving my best to do this with as good estetics as possible.

I ran mine same as you have pictured, at the time I couldn’t seem to get my hands on a long enough sensor wire though. Tried to find better pics with the cover off but this all I could come up with.IMG_2540.thumb.jpeg.e699c36b8e5926ca7a69e77fe9415d8b.jpegIMG_2541.thumb.jpeg.9313632332df7aa1a66feb42371d5170.jpegIMG_2623.thumb.jpeg.429ab973d57f6273b28ef82239344e99.jpeg

In my other XV-01 I have a 400mm sensor cable. I had to make an order at RC Kleinkram to get it,  since no shops here stock longer than 300mm. That was because of the placement of the sensor port on the Justock motor. This time the plan us ti use the 300mm I could not use last time and with the ESC in the front of the compartment it should also be possible to route it tidy.

Seems like a good plan. There's an argument, perhaps, that the ESC is going to get hotter in that box than in the open in other chassis. But have you experienced these ESCs getting hot? I don't think I ever have. I strongly suspect it'll be fine.

On watertightness, I kind of half think that if water does get in the vents in the box top it could maybe even create a worse situation than in an open chassis simply because it won't get out again. Then again, I've never had a problem and my XV-01 has done plenty.

Often the way! My Stadium Blitzer was meant to be a quick project to create a fun runner, but it's rapidly turning into an example I think deserves a bit of special treatment.

I have only used the XR10 Justock so far and with the fan. That has never got hot whatsoever so far, regardless of 30 min endurance racing stints or RBP rund with loads of braking. In dry conditions I gave ran without the duct over the ESC,  though.

Watertight was not the correct expression. I more after hindring direct splash on the electronics. After a run in snow or wet conditions I normally take off the cover, give it a blow with pressurized air and leave it upside down over night in the laundry room.

In my experience condensation is a bigger issue during winter. Even though (not even a 1060 powerung an SS) the ESC does not gets hot in there the room gets warm for sure. So opening up the cover from time to time is smart, regardless of wet or dry as long as the outdoor temps are on the low side. That said I find it astonishing how little powder snow is finding the way into the electronics compartment, despite the whole top of the chassis beeing covered with it.

My other XV-01 has never seen such conditions that yours have. I have mostly ran without the duct over the ESC, to be able to contcontrol the temps. (I had an accident with the lawnmower back in 2020, so the left long finger is incomplete and has reduced feeling on the tip and the underside. But the tip has become extremely sensible for temperatures and now is a good tool for keeping control of the temps in an RC:D).

So to wrap this up thus is the end. ESC and servo wires shortened and the wiring for tho on/off switch is exiting on the inside, looking better than on the old XV-01 (but there the wire was too short to do it this way. For others thinking about the same you would have a far easier job if you go for either a 10BL60, XR10 Justock or a SkyRC TS50. They all have a smaller footprint than the 10BL120. The Justock and 10BL60 can be mounted 90 degrees turned, so the motor wires are exiting towards the front. That would make the job easier.

I now consider this finished and it's ready for it's winter duties.
