I saw this when it was announced on FB, it got posted on a group chat I'm in.  It definitely looks like an absolute hoot, if I wasn't already doing a lot of racing next year I'd probably sign up for it.  BMR is a fantastic venue but it's about 3 hours drive each way for me.

I did have a quick look to see if there were any rules or details of permissible upgrades etc.

Yes I wonder what the rules are? A quick scan of the pics looked like a pretty wide range of cars. Maybe the 380 motor restriction is rules enough? It would be interesting to spend some time thinking about how best to choose and/or modify for the class. Weight reduction and really free, simple and light drive trains I guess count for a lot. Maybe this is a future for my old green Madcap? If any motor is OK on its crusty* old ball diff it'd surely be a 380....

*well, untested

Yea, the commute kinda puts me out too.

These guys came to the last couple of Tamiya Junkies meets. I think the hottest  motor you can run is  the 380 sport tuned, but most people were running silvercan. It's anything that came with a 380 standard or can be adapted. There were a few dt02 holiday buggies and brats at the last meet.

Here's some rules-related stuff.  Annoying they haven't pinned these or added them to the group's files tab.

Basically - performance mods are mostly not allowed (just shocks and bearings) but cosmetic mods are encouraged - which is an idea I really like :)

And it's a death match style race - no marshalling, if you crash you're out.  While I sort of like this in principle, in practice I can see it being hugely frustrating if you've spent the entire race deliberately staying out of trouble, only to be turned over by someone banzaiing it up the inside on the last lap.

I hope this works

edit - that didn't work, hold to, I'll fix it...

I've participated in a couple death match races and they were the most fun you could have racing. The whole thing is not to be taken seriously so when you get hacked or piped, as long as it wasn't intentional then it's easy to laugh off. Heck, everyone else is laughing so you might as well join in. I think the idea kinda promotes a lack of seriousness and pomp. The cosmetic mods sounds cool also. You could do weird stuff like fuzzy puppy dog ears or flashing cops lights or both if you feel up to it. Man I would be all over that if I was all over there.

Gotcha. I haven't got any of those, except the DT-03 which feels kind of wrong for this somehow, plus mine is modded beyond redemption.

The Super Champ/Fighting Buggy isn't mentioned but all its siblings are, maybe that's an oversight or do its upgrades render it invalid?I have got one of them NIB, but I don't want to build it stock.

Anyway, of all the other options I think the only ones I'd want to own are the Wild One or Kyosho Scorpion (will the turbo do?). So, that's about settled then. If it looks like I can make this I'll have to get me a Wild One or Scorpion!

Great video @toyolien. It seems like a DT-02 with Rough Rider body and Kyosho Turbo Scorpion wheels is the way to go. There were so.e really good looking builds there. It's also refreshing ti see they are riding on dirt.

That video - a lot of great stuff in there! I've seen other videos from this channel, racing WR02s - super fun on the dirt track.

Which models accept a 380 motor actually?

This could even go on-road as well. TT-02s come with 380 motor plates in the kit.

I'd definitely be in..... if it wasn't 4800 miles away.....

and not in hospital! 😜

@toyolien ..... I wholeheartedly agree with you about Facebook 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

This is an exciting concept! I raced semi-Pro from 1983 to 1992. Although competition is always good for innovation, I got frustrated by 1991, because things became too specialised, too un-scale (yup, made that word up!), too intense, and believe it or not.... too FAST!

To be competitive then, required lots of time, money, and constant upgrading. To me anyway, it was no longer a Hobby. It was no longer fun... at all.  😞  I wasn't alone. In the 5 some-odd years that followed, 12 more friends dropped out. We went back to parking lot and construction site racing - for FUN.  Another side effect, some of us had young kids who came along.....  all but one of them are now well into the Hobby!!

SO, after all that bla bla bla.... There's so many reasons why promoting the 380 class racing is a fantastic idea. It could grab more kids and adult novices, intimidated by the pace, intensity and occasional rudeness.

DON'T GET ME WRONG!  I've known several pro class racers who are great people. A few are on this forum! And some of them would also admit, some guys make it "difficult" to even get in, much less advance.

So yes, I'd love to see this promoted. Even on Facebook! Of course, some guidelines need to be addressed..... NO 2840 brushless motors on 6S and things like that.

"Low power - but eternal fun" :)

The more I think about it, the more I am thinking it might be a Project (uh-oh ... not again).

If I had to pick one of the Beetles it would be this one (Donutsgarage, #17):

I guess the rims are Kyosho ones?

The more I think about this series, the more I like it.  I'm still waiting to find out what my race calendar is for 2025 (I might have sort of verbally agreed to something that could take up a few weekends) but if I've got spare weekends (and more importantly spare budget) I might try to get along to some of these.

I kind of feel like resurrecting my Sand Scorcher or even fix up an old vintage resto project that I've had lying around for a while.  I don't really fancy any of the newer or bigger chassis - I want something where the wheels fit under the arches and the tyres look scale.  I built a couple of Scorchers specifically for vintage racing but with the rules getting tightened up and racing becoming more and more competitive, it feels like a good time to drop out, slow my car down and do something more fun.
