Super Astute LWB chassis

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Firstly, lot of drivers used LWB chassis plates back in 1990 because of the tracks. Different options were used at the time.

1) T2M Chassis (France)

In France around 1990/1991, J.M. Fraisse & D. Delapierre (French T2M / Tamiya Team) drove LWB chassis with a double deck. It was possible to buy it from T2M.

A great article in the French magazine "Auto RCM" from December 1991 : https://rc-paper.com/details_page.php?id=rev_autorcmfr-0123&pg=14

2) Euro Composite chassis

I don't have informations regarding this options except the pics I sent you.

It seems the chassis is 10mm longer than the original one.

3) UK Tamiya Team

No informations except pics found on the net.

Note : I read somewhere (??) the LWB chassis used in 1990 /1991 were 10 to 20/25mm longer than the original (to be confirmed).

Thanks @Kapt_Cavern, great info! That one looks to have a small extension to the rear (maybe 10mm?) as the shocks are well back away from the chassis, and also an extension at the front where the servo is (maybe 10-15mm?). It has a full size servo for starters and there's still a gap between the servo and battery. On the stock SA you have to use a half height servo due to the lack of space.

Interesting stuff. Thanks!

My CNC router is currently hacking and bleeping its way to version 1.0 😬

Well, as the great Roy Walker was so fond of saying, it's good but it's not right.

Left is the Tamiya original, right is my LWB.

The model is near perfect. One hole is out of place (one that isn't used in the SA manual) and I will just soften the fillet where the widest section joins the angle in towards the nose. From there I think it'll be hard to tell the difference. And I will have to go over the countersinks all manually because they're inconsistent, but I knew that'd be the case with my machine. Oh and I need to adjust some of the tool path settings but only to speed up the transitions.

But unfortunately the operator is an idiot. I used the wrong stock material, so the chassis I cut is only 2mm thick. It's useless really - it was meant to be a running experiment and a change in thickness will dramatically alter its stiffness. Also, it turns out I don't have any 2.5mm GRP. I thought I'd bought some but no. 🙄

@BuggyDad, you really did an amazing work.

@Kol__, maybe you could find some pics or articles in old English RC magazines regarding the Astute in competition around 1990/1991.

Possibly buddy, I did pick up a Sept 1990 Radio Control Model Cars mag the other day for a feature on the Saint Dragon. Will keep my eyes open for anything Astute based as well.
