I'm a cheap date

Recommended Posts

My wife and I typically just pick out our own gifts, and then say "Look what you got me! Here's how much it was." I told her I was going to take advantage of the Black Friday coupons to choose mine, and she said, "OK, just let me know how much."  So I spent two hours hemming and hawing on Amain Hobbies this morning, looking at instruction manuals, weighing pros and cons. I was thinking about a YZ-10, but no, it's too simplistic of a build. Hmm, maybe an Avante or Egress? Cool build, but then what? And neither one is something you can tinker with, and I already have plenty of fancy 4WD buggies I rarely drive.

I decided I needed something that will keep me occuiped in the long run, something that already goes with a bunch of parts already in my stash, something cheap enough to not feel bad about hacking up and modifying if the mood strikes me. So I ended up with... a Hornet Evo, and a Pajero. And I got myself a new 2mm hex driver too, one of the good MIP ones. $300 altogether, and I'm excited for them to arrive.

I just can't seem to get away from Grasshopper/Hornet/Lunchbox type thingies, and apparently I don't want to. I guess if you're going to have a favorite platform, you're better off choosing something cheap, right?

Cheap and simple is always a good thing in this hobby, less time hunting for spacers or cleaning open tub, more time to hang out with the family.

Anything Hornet/Lunchbox can be run for decades with barely any maintenance on the stock parts. Meanwhile most modern RCs, while quicker/tougher/better handling, eat through tires/batteries more frequently, and in my experience today's typical tub-designs love to scoop up leafs/dirt.

It's like the difference between an air-cooled VW and a Lamborghini.

Well what can I say. I took the rear of my DT-03, 3 part trees from the Hornet EVO and the chassis and body of my re-re Grasshopper and got myself a Grasshopper EVO. It was long ago I had so much fun building and tinkering.

I still wouldn't mind trying a Hornet Evo..... but right now, my priorities are VERY skewed! A-Main is having some decent sales, including 20% off WP-1080 ESCs! You got a lot for a little.
