The stock monster beetle tyres are really hard and I don't get much grip at our local carpet track.

I had read in several places about stretching the lunchbox tyres onto the rims.

I have done this, but I now have a huge amount of tyre wobble on all of the wheel.  The beads look to be seated correctly all the way round.

Is this normal?

Thanks

Paul

Too much traction creates more issues on a carpet.  Be aware how far you try to go beyond the design limits.  Shorter tires, mean you need to go to a bigger pinion to match.  More traction means more rollover in high speed corners.  I tried my lcg slash with dirt oval tires on an indoor carpet track, and the fronts had so much grip the servo literally could not turn them.

I've used them since the late 80's.... but on King Cabs. Had a little wobble, but adding foams sorted that. If budget is a problem, this is how I would go.

However, like the others said, modern 2.2 pin tyres would be much better.

Lunchbox tyres on a Kingcab!? Got any pictures?

MadAnt has a Hilux MR/King Cab in the for sale section with Lunch Box tires mounted on the rear.

Yes. Saw that. That could be an option for my Kingcab. It needs new shoes.

Been looking at 2.2 Proline tyres. Not a 100% convinced that they'll work.

Yup! They worked fine years ago, but a small amount of wobble is not bad after the tires are broken in. Too much tire wobble that causes balance issues and shakes is not good and can wear bearings and other driveline components.20241117_120707.thumb.jpg.f5b3d98c3fb7f25cffa0023e8a986de6.jpg20241117_121021.thumb.jpg.2ec0b549f0a0ba350c68891cea21148c.jpg

The Monster Beetle/Blackfoot etc. wheels are the exact same dimensions as the King Cab/Monster Racer/Super Blackfoot wheels. The Blitzer Beetle/Stadium Thunder/Stadium Blitzer rears (only) are also the same dimensions, hence the rear tyres fitting. The only difference between the wheels really is the design of the centres.

I fitted Blitzer tyres to the front and rear of a King Cab, wheels dyed black and custom shell. The wheels look a little small with the lower profile tyres, but still pretty cool. It was a restoration carried out for resale, so it's long gone now, but I'll see if I can dig out a photo.

Blitzer rear tires are great all around, but for something a little grippier on carpet, basically any carpet tires from any manufacturer should work. Pro-Line has the Holeshot and Prism, and JConcepts has a bunch too. Tires that are meant for clay tracks will also work ok for carpet as long as they still have all their tread. They will most likely all need foams, and to be glued to the rims.

For general outdoor/offroad bashing I go for the Traxxas Canyon AT (not the ST version, which is for Short Course trucks) and the Pro-Line Trencher, which are both a bit larger overall than the Blitzer tires, but still much smaller than the big Monster Beetle tires.

Here's a pic of the Canyons on my ORV monster buggy, on stock Blackfoot rear wheels and HPI Super Star MT fronts:

and with Trenchers:

These are Pro-Line fronts and JConcepts rears, both intended for clay but work great on tarmac and elsewhere (nearly bald from many stints on Racing by Post):

and a pic of a Blitzer rear tire on a Blackfoot rim (as @Kol__ mentioned above, King Cab rims are the same exact size):

I refitted the lunchbox tyres several times before 3d printing a cone to help me stretch them into place and so they were evenly stretched all the way round.  They worked pretty well.

Had a lot of fun, I thought I had won, however my transponder had fallen off so I didn't even register a single lap!

It's a lexan Kamtec body, 3d printed gearbox brace with a used silver can 21t motor and a 2s LiPo

Shame they didn't video the A final. ;)

The event the Paul is racing at specifies Tamiya tyres only so has to be between Blackfoot (hard none spiked), Monster Beetle (spiked), Lunchbox or guess you would be within the rules to use something like the ST block rear bubble (#54954), or Stadium Blitzer rears (#50450).

I've been using the Monster Beetle (spiked) with the outside row of spikes cut off and they work well but grip roll is a big issue on the carpet. I'll be switching to Lunchbox tyres next round but was planning to just use the lunchbox wheels too instead of stretching them.
