So, What Have You Done Today? (Vol 2 2025)

Huh, that part is also new to me, ive got a Rere Blackfoot and it didnt have one of those so i didnt realize it was missing here. Rere cost savings i guess?

Nah, im not looking to do a period correct rebuild, just to have a running Monster Beetle, If the servo saver ends up popping i guess ill just design and print a part or switch to a different servo saver :)

The Blackfoot never got that piece, unless you were to purchase it as well as get your hands on the slightly longer screws to account for the plate thickness. Just the original Monster Beetle and I think the Mud Blaster got it.

Indeed👍 Nothing like a bit of romance running. It's going in a Scorpion with a couple of option parts. Build thread coming this weekend.

We have a major bath remodel that just finished up.  With all the drywall sanding there was dust all over the house including my office right across the hall.   All my cars had a nice layer of dust so lunch time was car wash day.  Strategically got this all done before my wife came home from work.   :)

I spent a couple hours on this last night and into the morning. It's a fun build. For anyone concerned about the reported slop, my front suspension has none. Before I shimmed the suspension arms, they had about as much slop as a TT-02 but two .3mm shims on each lower arms and one ,2mm shim on the upper arms and there is zero slop yet it still feels free. I understand the slop will come bak after the linkages are installed but I have a pile of the reinforced open ended ball cups and a few other bits left over from my M-08. I am really looking forward to running this most likely later this afternoon.

Last night and today ive poked a bit more at the Recycled Monster Beetle.

Cotton sticks and red alcohol cleared most of the sharpie marks off the front fenders.

Switched the battery connector to a deans and after i added a flysky rx and some ubec i found that the steering servo was dead, possibly the reason it got parked without any other kind of damage.
Had another suitable replacement servo in storage so in it went.
Then i took some threaded rod and two left over shock end eyelets to make a replacement right steering pushrod.

I also shimmed out one of the battery compartment sides using a couple of 1150 bushings to fit my 2s 5.2a zeee lipo.

And now ive just done a couple of burnouts and turns around the living room, it drives and steers :)
I did however get a whiff of hot electronics and figured out that the resistor was getting pretty toasty after just a minute or two.

Do they handle 2s or should i install an ESC just to be sure? Im not really worried about the resistor breaking but id like to avoid runaways or fires.

On another note, the fit between the nose cone and rest of the body seems noticeably better and mold lines seem smaller than on the rere scorcher shells i have.

@Ziddan My hunch is that you would need an esc upgrade. Good to hear that it runs.

2s would be fine but don't upgrade the standard silver can motor. I would use an ESC.

I finished this happy little thing today. I still need to sort out a cleaner way to route the wiring but so far so good. From what little I have driven it inside I think it's gonna be a fun little booger. There is a lot to like about the kit and it was a fun build. The plan now it to run it how it is for a couple packs then see if I want to make it front wheel drive or leave it as a rear set up. Despite all the negative press about the MB-01 I decided to give it a try because I had a ton of goodies left over from my failed M-08 project. The only upgrades I spent money on were the shiny balls, bearings and the step screw things for the steering rack and the double cardens. I already had the front axels, the mini cva's, stiffer springs from my TT-02R and the hex hardware. I don't race so all I am hoping for out of this is a chassis that will run straight and hold a body. So far it's exceeding those expectations. I am still on the fence about the 30 turn FT motor. I might switch it back out for the silver can it came with but I am sucker for looks and the black motor kinda fits the chassis. Now besides cleaning up the spaghetti, I need to decide if it will be a Fiat Abarth or a Honda CRX and I am kinda leaning towards the CRX because I had a 1:1 back in high school and I have never owned a FF RC before.

Update, it's not rear wheel drive anymore. What a fun little chassis. It handles fantastic being pulled around by the fronts. The swap over was real simple. Flip the servo, make a shorter linkage, swap the front and rear top assemblies, and flip the diff housing. All in all it took about 20 minutes to do. Now I need to shorten the front tie rods to give it a little toe out. I used 3mm spacers between the ball cups. Tomorrow I may try some 2mm ones. Initial thought? FF is way more fun. RWD gave me M-08 flashbacks although the MB is more forgiving than the M-08 out of the box but the M-08 is more tunable. In FF it drives a lot like my TT02 when it's on power. This car fits my needs way better than the M08 ever did. Now I just have to wait for the Mini Copper body but until then, I am considering the Honda CRX or the Toyota Yaris GR.

I cut the body on my CC02 ready for higher clearance bumpers. Not today, but I also had some bits come in for the roof for a little bit of detail, sand ladders and roof box.

Also bought another RC but not a Tamiya, that I kept stock for about 4 hours.

More WC than RC for me today fitting a new toilet, I did however order a couple of SPT 4412 servos for the stock pile while I was having a tea break so I will have enough electronics for a buggy or something to hand. Always seems a good justification to purchase a new kit then.

I used the white “lights” that came with the Frog on another project, so today added the LED light cans that came with the FJ40 CC02. (Not using actual LED lights)

@ADRay1000 That looks so awesome. The Frog looks so cool with the Brat rears.

Thanks! thinking next aesthetic upgrade should be an aluminum wing (or al least one that’s not busted)

I love these rear tires, they’re actually from the Rough Rider and Fast Attack (slightly smaller than Brat). They work great on pavement and when the grass is cut extra short / dormant. stock tires lasted about 6 months, these are 3 years old or so. I need to replace the fronts.

Did some more to the Recycled Monster Beetle tonight.

ESC mounted to the underside of the MSC plate, RX velcro mounted up top (im low on RXs), added strengtheners to the trailing arm shock mounts and a diff clamp.

While i had the rear end partially apart i looked at the hexes of the drive shafts and they are in very good condition.

I noticed that the front shock mount screws are drilled all the way through the upper arms and held with a lock nut, instead of just being threaded into the plastic, a mod i did on my rere Blackfoot for the sake of durability, which i found to be neat on what is probably a close to initial release period build, seems like whoever put this together knew, or figured out, some of the tricks that are more commonly known in the internet age.

Im happy with it for now, beyond the fact that the power switch is so small that it doesnt reach between to two screw holes on the moun,t but i doubt it will affect function.

Ive also put my assortment boxes of screws, nuts, bolts, o-rings, heatshring tubing, connectors and other random hardware together in a large lidded tub so i can easily get them all out and put them all away neatly and easily.

I always regretted that the Unimog 406 didn't have a proper truck bed. Now I've finally built one myself.

In all honesty I’d probably justify a kit because I’ve got one screw left over from something 😉

Nothing concrete yet. A few options out there but the more I see the DT-04 the more I’m liking it, should be a good all rounder I think especially with some sand paddles on the back for the beach.

With what I have now & shuffling bits and pieces around opens up M Chassis, TC-01, Buggy or even a Big Rig.

It would be nice to add a BBX to the fleet at some point as a good representation of new to the old SRB’s I have 🤔

In the meantime though while I’m waiting for paint to dry on the FB, reducing a LW M-05 to MW for the Phat Bodies Mini will keep busy for now. (And refreshing my brain looking through your BBX build thread)
