So, What Have You Done Today? (Vol 2 2025)

Recommended Posts

I changed the bearings in the buggy today.

Not the GH, nor even the hornet, but the Babyzen Yoyo Travel Buggy. (If you live in somewhat middle class London it seems around 90 % of all buggies are this design, as they can fold up small and can fit in buses and tubes easily)

A few bearings were pretty rusted (way more than I've ever had in an RC car) and a few needed serious help to be removed.

I got a little worried as one of the bearings had disintegrated, leaving the inner section stuck on the axle. I tried to remove, but got it as far as the end of the axle before it stuck utterly.  This was bad as with half a bearing on the end of the axle I couldn't put the wheels back on and nursery pick up was only a few hours away. In the end the only way to fix was to get a Dremel and cutting disk and cut out the bearing. With two bearings on the wheel there was much less wobble!

Then I cleaned up, greased and new bearings added all round. Used lots of my trusty marine grease to try and keep off water this time.

It was second hand from someone from my wife's work, so it's good to get it working again. These things are really expensive new, so happy I can keep it rolling for a few more months. Will keep up the oiling a little more regularly now too.

Looking into RC control by smartphone.

This would be nice to use for a small indoor crawler or similar.

Found a nice way to make custom control apps, and have bluetooth communications to a remote controller. Something of a new area to play with.

Try looking at Lego Technic. I have a Mercedes lorry that is controlled by an app and Bluetooth. You might be able to adapt that.

I have created a monster. This motor will probably massacre the TT02s puny diffs but it's gonna be fun trying. If it breaks I will rebuild it, simples 🤣

Heh and here I am teaching my 9yo daughter how to drive real r/c cars, aircraft, and helis both FP and CP and not use things like smartphone drones and call it 'flying'.  But agree on Lego, they have somewhat tortuous phone apps for 'r/c' and trains, much to the chagrin of many Lego folk.

My M-01 rebuild is pretty much done:

20250225_130332

20250225_130353

All the 'orrible paint is gone, everything is clean, and the car is back together with a new motor, full bearings, a steel pinion and oil shocks. When perusing the manual, I noticed that the 53155 Low Friction Aluminium Damper Set was a period hop-up for this chassis, so since I had a set going spare, I put them on.

I am sure I have a period-correct pre-2000 ESC around somewhere, but I can't find it. It will probably turn up when I am looking for something totally unrelated, but in the interim I'll be running this LRP Runner Plus Reverse. I know they have a reputation for spontaneous combustion when using LiPo, but I see no need for anything other than NiMH on a chassis like this. The servo that came with the chassis was an ancient Acoms unit, so I replaced it with a slightly less ancient Acoms with a modern plug. The receiver is an unashamedly modern 2.4GHz item as I don't want it running away on its own with 27MHz gear.

A reminder of how it started:

I took my Rustler out and soon learned why they called the old 20t Traxxas brushed motors "Stinkers", if you run them long enough they get pretty hot and start to stink! Still, it didn't perform terribly given the age.

Also, this is what happens when you don't tighten your wheel nuts enough.

Made a trip up north about 100k’s to my nearest hobby shop that will be closing in a couple of months to pick up a few tins of PS paint. The owners were trying to sell it as a going concern but sadly no takers. Bummer.

Then I carried on up towards the beautiful Rosslyn Bay area to take a few pics ( @yogi-bear  😉) and run the Fighting Buggy & Stadium Blitzer on the beach. It’s was fairly windy but you can usually find somewhere as to not get blown off your feet. There’s rain on the way so I decided to take what opportunity I could…

that is a good looking buggy! One of my first proper RC memories is seeing the vintage version of this in a hobby store. Looks like you had a lot of fun with it.

Painted some wheels for a project coming up. I was looking to match the color of the Manta Ray wheels, and this is as close as I could have hoped for!

This is four coats of Tamiya White Primer, then two coats Tamiya Light Gray Primer, and one final coat Tamiya TS-13 Clear:

I am enjoying this tire painting thing…

Added some rears.  It was warm enough outside to do some painting (primer and TS17).

The rear tires are technically RC10 tires and don’t fit exactly right (needs glue) on the RR rear wheels.  But this Set will be for a Shelfer so its fine as is.

Paint needs a touch up…

Finished putting stickers on this guy. So. Many. Decals.
No major errors but plenty of little ones. It’s a runner so   Guess I should say it’s just been dropped over the body posts so this is not the ride height (with the rear wheel rubbing the shell!)

After lots of masking,

IMG_0102.jpeg

First colour was PS20 Flouro to be applied, followed by a bit of PS62 Orange then PS34 Bright Red to finish off today before the curvy tape decides to lift off. It did in a couple of places but will clean up later.

I was going for something a bit brighter than my usual palette for a change. Happy so far,

Finished the wild one build, and gave it a little test run in the garden.

I finally fitted the Ro Mans 380 motor in my Tomahawk. I also mounted the new front end after I crashed it into a rock almost a year ago. Now I'm looking forward to healthy Postal Racing.

The paint arrived for my Turbo Optima yesterday.
kTGG92n.jpeg

I was going to go for a candy red colour using translucent red and gold. I’ve not done anything like this before so had a bit of an experiment on an off cut of lexan. It’s not gone well at all! It just looks orange, in both colour and texture. This needs mulling some more. I have a can of regular red in the paint box.

Along with the paint some turnbuckles and universal shafts (for the front) arrived. These along with a carbon plate and shiny plastic wheels are the extent of the options I was going to build the car with. The motor is the brushed one from the Fazer (I think). As far as I can tell it’s the one used in all the promotional material. The dream is a full Le Mans brushless set but if I brought that now I’d probably end up divorced!

Yesterday and today I drove two different M chassis, same worn down S grips, same VW bug shell. I have to say that I prefer the M06 as an on-road chassis over the MF01X. The MF01x brakes better but that's about it.

The third photo isn't mine (nor am I Big Guy RC), it's a reference that I used when adding a few sponsor decals. I also added electric tape over the headlights to complete the SCCA look.

Today I dedicated a little time to my XM01. I made a plug out of leftover urethane to close the opening to the rear main shaft cup. This should prevent small stones from blocking the cup again.

Despite some doubts about its usefulness, I also finally cut out the chassis cover, painted it and adjusted it. Who knows, maybe I will use it one day.

Something else that I did today, I applied some MCI decals to my Prerunner just to give the shell some more "life". It's not perfect but when was the last time that you saw a pristine trophy truck?
