So, What Have You Done Today? (Vol 2 2025)

Recommended Posts

One of my old XL5 rustlers that refuse to break.  Had gotten to the point where it would just spin out and was tired, my daughter gave up on it and I'll admit the diff was wasted.  Put in a new diff, finished the ball bearings, new tires, re-oiled and adjusted the shocks, and it LIVES AGAIN!  Bumper and wheelie bar in daughter livery. Total riot now on 2s, didn't even try the 8.4 hump.  Wheelies everywhere and hero jumps full blast launches straight on dust or pavement.  Cheap as chips this thing just will not die.  Had this forever and threw like $60 at it to reinvent it yet again.

Something to be said about these cheapie-mo-bettas. Spent 4 evenings fully overhauling just one Monster slash 4x4, Spent about an hour on this and done.  Still absolutely nothing broken-Time to go out with my daughter and try to break something.

For comparing with Brat wheels (I don’t have a set that isn’t mounted.)  The fronts are 1.5” size and rear is 1.75”.

No funding for RC cars these months as I bought a 'new to me' real car.

Thankfully no big plans this weekend so I'll do some work on the astromech droid. And given it is nice weather take the TNX for a spin.

Today I went back from my parents house with the original manual for the Super Blackfoot I had circa 1993 maybe... Almost moving memories :)

But I wonder why there's no part numbers, beside the F-Parts, G-Parts and so on. Don't remember if there were an additional sheet giving the infos.

The magic of Tamiya box art is calling her!.  My 9yo daughter is down with RC.  My 14yo son would only do it if it's on Oculus

I've been spray painting as the weather here has been fabulous. Also had an hour in the garden with the monster beetle  it's a tad slow for my liking as it's still running on 5000mAh NIMh batteries.

Took some brave pills and started painting my Raybrig NSX. This is quite a rare set, from 1998 and on my only Tamiya Nitro Chassis. I really dont wanna mess this one up. Been on it all day.

Daughter's 4th birthday family party (party with her friends tomorrow), so only RC related action today was to renew my Tamiya Club annual subscription.

Man, that IS strange! You may want to write them in yourself, for reference:

I finished up the paint and detailing on the Hornet EVO, originally this was going to just be blue but I had a can of Duratrax white sitting around.

For future reference, Tamiya paint sprays on thicker than Duratrax, dries quicker, and it's cheaper.

Nice Hornet Evo. I like them in blue.  Is this your 380 contribution?

Thanks, I will hopefully have two 380 contributions and they will both have solid axle setups.

@Kowalski86 Looks cool that. I always like that blue with Hornet decals

Thank you, I went with that color after looking into a number of vintage baja buggies.

Yeah, don't get why. Or it's an early manual? They printed it out but the references weren't in the Tamiya drawers yet? I don't think, as it's the same chassis as the Bush Devil, that came out earlier. Don't know, maybe a Tamiya Specialist will come across this post and give us an explanation :)

@Kowalski, what a nice Hornet. I usually dislike Hornets, but yours is special. Nice color scheme, totally changing things! Still, I wonder if there's a "real" Hornet in real life, I mean with those strange wheel arches, backside.

It's a miracle, I painted something.... The restomod '87 gets a rere shell so I don't have to paint the window frames, just skipping the one fake sponsor.  I'm leaving the 100% restored original is going to get sold off unpainted with original decals.  As a note there is absolutely nothing whatsoever different between an original and repop body, except a rere is film coated, and not $100, nor is it scratched up after 40 years of storage.

Thanks, that was my main goal. Something different but still fitting for a desert buggy.

While researching old dune buggies I didnt see any that were similar to a Hornet, however the "Woodstuff Chaparral" looks a lot like a Grasshopper.

Not today, but sometime last week (been pretty sick and out of commission these past few days).

I took the Mad Van to the park. It was quite nippy with windchills at -25°C, which made for a fun but very brief outing. Screenshot-20250306-112840-Video-Player.

In other news, I've been concentrating on the Turbo Optima driver lately. Besides the inevitable last minute touch-ups, this will be the last step of the build (sorry @Re-Bugged for making you wait on those brews you saved, I know it's taking me long but I hope it will be worth it in the end 😅).

Since this body figure is lexan -and a far cry from the scale looks and details of a Tamiya driver- I thought I'd play around with painting both inside and outside in an effort to gain some depth, as well as using its own protective film as masking tape.

This is it, after some back and forth since I changed my mind a couple times on which color seat and safety belts should be.

20250305-194655.jpg

Safety belts, steering wheel, head rest and glove accents are painted under lexan to preserve the shine, while the rest is painted on top and finished with mat sealant.

For some reason, using its own ghost as masking tape proved to be particularly satisfying, especially when the moment came to peel it off 😀

Once peeled, the cowl got some golden bling too, and here is the finished item.

Next, on to finishing the helmet -and face- and then the TO will have her driver!

Anyone got a tip on what brand/width of masking tape is good for this model? For masking curves?

Ye old Sand Scorcher painting….

Sorry to hear your woes mate, definitely Tamiya tape for the blighter that’s for sure. The curvy tape does tend to move a bit sometimes if left to long, but I found the 3mm will do most jobs I’ve asked of it.

Hope this might help though…
