So, What Have You Done Today? (Vol 2 2025)

Recommended Posts

got pooched out of my delivery from RC Mart. stuff comes from the other side of the globe, and gets hung up by my lazy mailman that doesn’t attempt to get my signature. He does take the time to fill out the attempted delivery form. He’ll do it two more times, and eventually I’ll have to go pick it up myself. Monday is a holiday in the US, and I probably wont get my hands on it for a week.

self-centered rant over.

XV-01 step 1, the diffs. After 3 days vertical and gasket side down (unlike the picture), no leak. Hopefully it will remain so when I start running the car. I chose 5000 front, 2000 rear and it feels just right when twisting the outdrives and by comparison with my other rally car.

I set my front diff at 30k and rear at 10k. Although I run mostly tarmac and hard soil than loose or mud.

I set diffs lighter than most people. I run in the gravel or on tarmac covered with fine dust.

Almost finished the chassis for the Ford GT.   The blue bits on this one are all after market and I have to say, I got lucky with all of them.    I disassemble the shocks and reassembled them with green slime and the proper amount of shock oil.   Seem very smooth and the rear ones were on there for several days and no leaking.   The center shaft and cups all fit well and run smooth.   The steering linkage is the one that surprised me the most.  A few reviews said they had as much slop as the stock set but the set got seem as tight as the Tamiya brand ones in on of my other TT02s.  Only thing I need to do it get the balls to move a little smoother on the outboard links.  I have a trick that we used to do with ball links on the RC planes that will smooth them right up.

Snapped these photos for this upload but cannot seem to capture the green.  The brightness drops out when uploaded...

I believe you wrote some time ago, that you sold XV-01. Attempt #2?

This week I started to build my new Wild One kit, today I worked on the suspension, the front shocks I had build but they where overdamped and to hard, the same for the rear shocks the springs are to stiff, and I did not have other springs for it.

So the front of the shocks I reassamble,  I took a little file en open up the holes in the shock pistons and I left the red shock adjuster out of it, and at the bottom of the shock I put a red o ring so that the spring stays in place and do not wobble arround.

For the rear shocks I had some Gmade shocks in my stash with a lot of different springs for it and they had the perfect lenght, so I used them instead of the stock ones, put a bumpstop on the shocks to  prefent that the trailing arms hit the rollcage.

The suspension is now nice and smooth, a lot better then stock.

Today I fitted some bigger 1.9 tires to my CC02 chassis. They looked cool which made me happy. :)They rubbed the steering knuckle which made me sad.:( Then I checked the prices on wheel wideners and they were pricey, which made me sadder. Then I compared my wheels to another set of CC02 wheels (different styling) and saw the offset was different. I was surprised.:o I test fitted the second set of wheels and now nothing rubs. I was very happy. What an emotional roller coaster of a day.

How big are your tires ?,  I just ordered some 94 mm tires for my cc-02 with some 1,55 ich steel beadlock rims, did not want to go with a to big tire and keep the scale look.

Mine are 100mm on CC02 Land Cruiser 1.9 rims. I was basically going for the Traxxas TRX-4 High Trail "look" (albeit proportionately scaled down for the smaller CC02 chassis). That look approximates the larger, but still street legal, 1:1 rigs that drove around my hometown back in the 80's. I'll take a pic later today as I'm mocking up the body.

@dannymulder Here's that pic.

20250119_090912

I tried using the separate wheel in the pic first and had rubbing issues. The wheels I used are what stock on the CC02 Land Cruiser and actually have a different offset.

The body was a smashed up wreck that I  pieced back together. Its still missing the front fender corners. Since its a trail truck, destined to get scratched and knocked around, I'm debating about leaving the body in the rough form seen here. Don't worry, that nice original Ford grill is already ruined when someone drilled holes through the headlights and the tailgate is missing tail lights.

This tires and wheels looks good under this ford body, also the size of the tires.

I made a bumper for the QD LB.

Found a piece of plastic at work, happened to be the exact grey to match the front bumper.

Cut to size and drilled with a recess cut out for the wheelie bar wheel.

Front.

Rear.

Looks cool with the all black grill and dark grey bumpers.

Torn between adding some livery and keeping plain.

I think this might be one of my favourites.

This needs to be an official kit, I'd gladly buy a DT-03 setup as an old Formula racer.

On my end I built my first Mini 4wd, I wanted something like an old Schafer Stomper but not absurdly expensive. Everything went together fine other than it being short two of the tiny springs for the main driveshaft, I had to grab springs out of a pen.

(I noticed the missing blinker, I've since fixed it after these photos).

I know it’s not a Tamiya, but I completed my Schumacher Cougar 2 Works Classic. The chassis was done last week, today was putting in the electrics and doing the body. I’ve gone for a Hobbywing Juststock 10.5 combo based on recommendations from other local racers. I’m not happy with the body though, as I’ve managed to scrape some areas already - I think I have probably put the layers on too thick, or maybe I didn’t leave it to dry long enough before putting it on the chassis. Either way, I’ll run this one for now but may get an expert to do the next one.

I got a head start -pun intended, again- on the helmet for the TO driver. I love driver figures, love working on them and seeing them come to life. Nothing compares to the ever-vintage feeling of the Tamiya ones IMHO, but I'll try to give this Kyosho guy some character and soften his aggressive looking face a little. I assembled, filed and primed the head. First coat and wet sanded it. Also, I thought I'd make a visor this time.

Despite it being my first try, I found it easy enough. I used and old decal sheet as a stencil to draw the shape on a water bottle, then cut and filed it.

20250118-160234.jpg

Drilled some tiny holes on the side, just big enough for glasses screws and... voila!

20250119-192054.jpg

Pretty stoked with the result, I think I'm gonna have to do this on all of my drivers at some point. Bonus feature, the visor is not fixed, it can move up and down like the real thing!

I took everything off for the painting, but I can't wait to see it done now that I got a glimpse of it.

Still figuring out the colors for both suit/gloves and helmet. I'm probably going to stick to the black and gold scheme, but will likely add some odd colors accents, as I don't want it to look too cookie cutter once on the buggy.

On another note, we left the city this afternoon for the first time since early December. By the time we reached the destination it was pitch black, but I remember installing some decent outdoors lights last fall, and in fact I was still able to run a car for a little bit (too cold to stay outside for more than one battery pack).

I chose the Manta Ray, as I wanted a test drive after carrying out some massive work on it, following the tumbling accident of last month. It drives and jumps very well, the handling feels good and I'm overall happy with it. Only thing, it sounds like there's a bunch of angry witches screeching inside the gearbox when hitting full throttle from a standstill. That 13.5 used-to-be-sensored bluebottle does take a toll on the DF-01 gearbox... and I guess those gears are quite worn out. I think I can live with that for the time being though, as it does run great nonetheless.

Wow — I really like the visor, so cool!
