Has anyone got any experience with tamiya TBLM 02 brushless motors?  I was wondering how they compare with other brands.  I'm looking for a 17.5t for my M07 to replace the 21t core rc brushed motor that I'm currently running.

There's a thread on here discussing the 15.5T motor which I tried and found no better than a Torque Tuned brushed motor in both speed and efficiency.  I used Tamiya's gearing recommendation and the suggestion was if it was geared "properly" then it should be good, but I never tried it.  It could be that the TBLE-04S ESC can't cope with the lower gearing and that's why Tamiya recommend what they do, or it could be that they don't have many cars that can gear appropriately with standard parts.  Who knows.

Given the price of them, I wouldn't recommend them unless you really want to keep it all Tamiya.  The Hobbywing Quicrun 3650 G2 brushless series are cheaper and great motors.  I run a 13.5T with a TBLE-04S ESC in a Mad Bull and it's pretty quick.

For what it's worth, I am using the TBLM 02 10.5t motor in three applications (Turbo Optima Mid, Super Avante, and BBX) each with Hobbywing XR10 esc's and I am very pleased with them.  When compared to other 10.5 motors I have from GForce they don't seem to lack power.  I do use extra timing and boost features from the ESC and I've never had any run hot.

It had been said many times that they are very much older generation motors copy/clone/rebadged from Speed Passion, a company that had gone out of business long ago. True or not, I am not sure, but the numbers seems similar to the equivalent motors from SP.

I use the Tamiya 15.5t, and 10.5t in some of my Tamiya kits. What I really like about them is that they fit in almost everything since the wires are soldered on the end. I also like that they are completely sealed.

A USP they have is the bullet connectors and tidy shape. I find the 10.5 a good power/speed for my intended purpose so for me it's something of a moot point that other 10.5 turn motors have more power. However, I've bought them cheap from PJ, which made them a great value option too, and which they aren't any more, so I think I will buy other better value options now and save my TBLMs for applications where the form factor matters the most, like it does in the TD2/4.

They are marginally slower and heavier than contemporary motors.

Their kv ratings are on the box, so you can compare. IIRC the 17.5 is about 300 rpm down at stock timing compared to a 2025 Surpass.

So, there’s no ‘real’ reason to use them, as if you pay sticker price they cost broadly what other motors cost.

if you can get them cheap they are fine though. They have adjustable timing or you can boost them via ESC settings.

tl;dr not worth paying sticker price for but if found cheap they are ok.

Would echo everyone else's thoughts. At 3370kv the 10.5 is barely any more powerful than the Speed Passion 13.5R MMM (3300kv) upon which it based. Also has fixed timing, whereas my 13.5Rs have 11-20 deg advance, so in all likelihood even my very old tech 13.5R is probably faster than a 10.5 tamiya. You definitely need a not-Tamiya ESC to run the 10.5. I melted a couple of TBLE02S a few years ago running the 13.5R in Ultra G and my Thunder Dragon. Both run lovely with Hobbywing juststock XR10 60A ESCs.

If you do absolutely need a Tamiya esc, the Tble-04SR is your best bet if you can find one. They can be quite pricey though. I have one on my bbx and one on a TB 04 pro.

Or just add a cheap fan to a TBLE-04S as that's all they are... ;)

But that defeats the purpose of going all Tamiya!
