Wow so the Audi 90 is 251?! That scuppers my plan!

What's your plan?

Couple of interesting things in this video. The subtitles weren't completely clear but I think they're saying that the cage can be removed and other bodies can be mounted. It also looks like the rear cage of the cage has extra mounts for something. Hopefully others on here can make more out.

Can the Japanese make a video without stupid sounds and invasive graphics all around?
Anyway, this model looks like a Lego Technics model.
Too bad, another great missed opportunity IMHO.

I think that's not a japanese issue, but an issue of the time we are living in. I see videos with the most stupid content getting the most followers. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Funny, I had the same impression! 👍🏽

I'm pretty sure that was intentional. Lego sell a lot of Technics models and Tamiya no doubt want some of that action.

But their Technics "RC" products ... is the reason I bought a Tamiya for the kid. Loved the build of the Lego buggy but the rest, not so much. :D

Just watched this live video with more info on the DT04

Seems that the idea behind it was "individual customisation", and that a lot of option parts for the DT-02 and DT-03 can be used. He talks about the kit coming with body and wing mounts to use regular buggy bodies like the Sand Viper. And, he said that next month Tamiya will be releasing a body compatibility chart for other bodies like the Sand Scorcher. I quite like the versatility of it. We'll see how popular it becomes I guess.

Money shot.

looks fun. Could be useful for neo-retro dirt tracks. Would have liked to have seen a better gearbox, but otherwise I like the philosophy of it.

They've simply added a hex hub on the front wheel (one of the most desired mods for the old DT-kits), a modern-looking steering system, and a BB01-style cage (because it sells and I think can be adapted on DT-02/3 as well). For me, it's a big YES. The body might look ugly to  longtime Tamiya fans, but as long as they offer more options, I don’t mind. A solid starting point for creating great mods.

Ok, so now this not only makes sense, but seems a really good idea to me now!

Making something simple that can easily be modified and customised with other own-brand components is a great idea. Especially if they are making body mounts for iconic bodies like the Sand Scorcher - could we see race series' with them running Rough Rider and Scorcher bodies? Sounds cool to me!

It kinda sounds like it's the buggy version of the TT chassis' - one simple chassis with lots of hop ups that you can put virtually any body on.

Yes!

I think the fact Tamiya sell the kit to be purposely modified makes a big difference rather than home brew. Make a nice big poster with all the DT04 official body options, some box art and they will sell bucket loads.

In fact just sell the chassis, spare bodies and new stickers and some collectors will buy one DT04 for each.

That looks great, but I think a lack of gearing options is going to be a problem?

You'll only have 17T pinion (9.28:1) or 19T pinion (8.31:1).

The Tamiya Race Series for these buggies spec the 15.5t Tamiya motor, so the gearing will be fine for that. I don't think that making this suitable as a modern (ish) race buggy was ever in the design brief.

That's a dog slow motor though, no faster than a Torque Tuned  :(  Longer lasting and no maintenance though, of course.

I'm not expecting it to be a modern race buggy, and I guess Tamiya only care about it being used with their motors...

Right you lot we are going to make a ‘high performance off road 1:10 buggy’ that should be an accurate facsimile of those rear engined buggy’s what we’ve done before but whatever you do it must not be high performance or in anyway suitable for an actual track despite being the only thing in our modern line up looking like it could or should be’

i joke but I wish Tamiya could get clear on what these things (TD /BBX/DT) are actually for.

They did, in that live video above. They portray it as a basic blank canvas that builders can use to create their own unique buggy. It's not a race buggy or a super fast basher. It's a simple starting point for either customisation and option parts or just run it as it is.

That's exactly what they're interested in. Slower speeds and more fun rather than 6.5t motors and 3s.

I run these 911 bodies 997 / 992 in TCS ProSpec and TT Cup Car series.  In both I have swapped out the kit wing for the optional Tamiya wing set, which are approved in the rules.

Interesting. How have you mounted the aftermarket wing?

Yeah, hence would be awesome if the BBX gearbox was an upgrade.

I just watched the video again, and spotted some holes in the chassis that aren't used. They look very much like the BBX transmission hole layout. Of course, then they would also need a separate mount for the rear suspension arms.

That would be very cool not just as a DT04 upgrade, an entire box set would be likely cheaper for custom builds, than sourcing individual parts.

Can change quite a few chassis's to 251mm

What chassis are you thinking?

I put a 251mm Porsche 911 GT3 Cup shell on a TT02 Type S. All it took was a putting on the reversible TRF 418 arms on the rear and it was bang on.

This is, in fact, a brilliant idea! One which I read about on the forum a short while ago, I may add.

My mind is already wandering to what parts of my Sand Viper I may be able to update, or if I could cheaply (via a kit in a bag?) switch it to the DT-04 chassis in the future.
