Outrunner motor options

Recommended Posts

I'm looking at the option for an out runner motor for a TL01 build. I am going for large wheels but I want to keep the speed down and torque up.

I've got a couple of options.

One would be a gear reducer, but I feel that the this would make the motor stick out a lot from the side of the car with a 540 can. Are there any shorter 540 diameter motors that are available? I feel that a 370/380 motor might not quite have the desired effect. I see Tamiya produced an M-sized Acto-tuned motor, but that seems super rare. My thoughts are this probably was a remodelled Mabuchi motor, but not been able to find an equivalent.

The other option is an BL outrunner motor which are short enough so they could  be used with a gear reducer too. Are these censored, and could one work with a TBLE 02s, which I have doing nothing.

Any help or ideas would be great too.

Crawlers and Scalers are using outrunners now, but none of them is sensored. So, they won't work with your ESC.

You could go for a 25.5 (or higher) sensored brushless motor, but they are not cheap. Or try different brushed motors from 30 to 55 turns, as they are cheap

Your use case seems to suit any of the simple 10$ brushed crawler motors, such as a 55t. These are a boring choice compared to an Acto-Tuned or a fancy out runner, but they really do work perfectly to slow down a car while providing tons of torque.

Outrunners are very smooth, even sensorless. I don’t think that they’ll work with a Tamiya ESC, but they work fine with an ESC designed to work with a 4-pole motor. The only real drawback for your application is noise. Outrunners ring like a bell, and I find their sound unpleasant to the point that I don’t enjoy trail runs with guys using outrunners.
