On this topic, you right knowledgeable bunch, is there a way for me to fit Tamiya 54896 Rib Spike Front Tyres to my TD2 (hex)?

t54896_1.jpg

I ordered them as I'm having some under-steery issues on a local compacted grass track and I thought these might improve front end 'bite' but they're too narrow for my hex-fit front buggy wheels.

Alternatively does anyone know of an aftermarket 2WD front wheel which I could try

to get the kit rib to bite you could try removing the foam if you fitted one and drilling out the vent hole to 3-4mm. It’s not a grippy tyre though, I’ve no idea what it’s for.

If you are happy to drop the Tamiya wheels and tyres, normal racing 2.2” wheels are a direct fit on the front and can be fitted to the rear using the 3.5mm hex and a serrated nut.

mini-spikes rear and stagger rib front in yellow compound will give you what you need on grass.

Tamiya used to have amazing wheels.

The new (?🙄) fad of 2.2" wheels just look wrong on a 1/10, so even if the design looks good, they still look wrong as a big Donk wheel...

JC racing Hotshot wheels?...🙊🤣

I guess Tamiya supply 60mm star dish wheels as a deliberate ploy to make customers buy the genuine tyres from Tamiya.  I suggest to buy 2.2” rims from Kyosho instead.

I've been looking at some of these options but it seems like there are different styles of mounting.  Sometimes the front wheels may not use the standard size bearing, often the rears don't have a 12mm hex.

Which ones work?

I'm kinda confused, because I put Proline 2.2 tires on my DT03 using tamiya stardish wheels. I used the 2wd front wheels and standard buggy rear wheels. They fit just fine on there. More scale and stylish options would be nice.

The wheel can be cut to fit narrow tires, which is what I did to mount Proline Wedge tires. I used lexan scissors to cut the wheels, so no mess was made.

I guess you cut one of the "ribs" off of the back side? How did you get a nice smooth finish?

I'm open to trying it, after all the wheels aren't expensive to replace if I do screw it up.

I put a nut and bolt through the wheel then put the bolt in the chuck of my drill. Then turn it on and hold a craft knife against the wheel. Perfect cut every time.

Nice and smooth! Nah, just left whatever finish the scissors left. I could file it smooth, but it's the inside, so I don't care about the looks there.20250223_170056.jpg.d38438d1013786f2b38042997d2edebe.jpg

I like them and especially in blue.  I only wish that there was more choice.

Same size, different designs wouldn't hurt indeed.

Same goes for different offsets IMO.

It's not just buggy wheels. I'd like to see some new M-chassis wheels instead of seeing Abarth wheels on every "rally" release.

Amen to this.

With a little good willing the look like Ronal Kleeblatt, which is a legendary wheel design. But I get your point. It's about time we get some wheels in BBS RS design for starters.

Had a go at modelling up a 2.2" hex fitting rear wheel with all standard offsets etc, using the Hornet/Grasshopper wheel design as an inspiration. Got some 3D printing to get done with work so I might tag a couple of these onto the order if they're too much money to see how MJF PA12 material holds up in practice.

They are a nice design, but they are about 35(!!!!) years old. I think the first car to get them was the Super Astute and Top Force.

Agreed, Tamiyas best design, and they stay fresh as they haven't been released on EVERY SINGLE car that they make.

They arrived! Quite expensive and piggybacked on a work order, but quite pleased

Quite heavy but that is because I went strong and tough. I reckon with some silver paint on the lugnut features should look quite nice.

Think i am going to save these for mt DT04 purchase once i can sell some other things first

TRF buggy wheels are great so that solves that issue.

The others are fine, like, no worse than any other wheel out there tbh

Back when Tamiya was producing them they offered different levels of stiffness for the rim.
