How are we measuring toe and camber?

Hello - just wondering what tools folks are using to measure their adjustments? I’m dimly aware of setup stations,  but also there are various gauges around. 
 

In principle, camber seems like a straightforward thing (thanks gravity and horizontal surfaces) but I wonder how you get a reference for toe? 
 

Mostly I’m interested in experimenting to get some idea of how different adjustments alter driving characteristics- perhaps some slooooow racing in the future.

I use a camber gauge, it measures the angel in degrees. For toe I go by eye or use a ruler, but there are also toe gauges you can buy.

I ususally just eyeball it. But then, most of my cars are so old and worn that there's a degree or two of slop in all the steering/suspension parts anyway.

Camber gauge like @MadAnt mentioned.

For toe I am not looking for a specific degree of toe etc. so any change is relative to the existing setup, so I use digital calipers to measure the steering link and I might change it by 1-2mm per side in the desired direction and test.

Myself? Squint my eyes a bit, maybe rotate turnbuckles about one poofteenth, say she'll be rite and off we go.

Thanks all. Ruler for toe never occurred to me but in hindsight seems clearly the most straightforward way to do it (well, without spending $$$ for fancy set up rig). And then a little trigonometry 🤓

Without a setup station, I have a cutting mat with grid lines and eyeball it by lining the car straight. You can also use an old school protractor if you want to be precise with the degrees. For camber, I just use a camber gauge.
