Hi

I recently got a Hornet Evo and I would like to get some different options for rims and tires..  I know about the one piece aluminum rims, the 3 piece aluminum rims, and I have no idea how the large diameter rims work or what tires to use on them..

The large diameter rims are 1.9" so you can use crawler tyres, or the BBX tyres.

If you want something a little higher performance but still with vintage looks, grasshopper2 wheels are a straight fit, and a little larger. You can fit the tamiya pin spike rear tyres and gh2 fronts, or get the J Concepts 1.7" rear tyres and 1.9" fronts and they will be a big step up in grip and performance.

Or you can fit the rear hex adaptor and get some JC Racing Products 2.2" wheels in one of the classic tamiya designs. Can recommend the Wild One versions.

The fronts are no problem, but the rears are a different story. Apparently the EVO rear axles are shorter than the originals, thus the need for the new, thinner drive adapter, so the standard GH2 drive adapters may not leave enough axle to fit a normal wheel nut on.

There is also apparently an issue with the position of the drive pin on the axle, and certain adapters not working because the pin fits into them too deep, causing binding on the axle carrier bearings when the wheel nut is tightened up. The GH2 adapter seems like one that would have this issue.

There are workarounds for both problems, but it's not a straight swap.

In my experience, you can get pretty much any wheel to fit any chassis.

Find wheels you like the look of, and then find a way to make them work.

May need hex adapters, low profile wheel nuts, or even new driveshafts, but I've not had wheels I couldn't fit as yet..
