Is there a modern alternative to TA-03 #53267 or M-05 #54194?

If I try to build it from scratch, I would use the following parts:

  • Tamiya #49299 DIFF SPRING
  • Tamiya #51341 DIFF SCREW 2x22mm
  • Tamiya #10440410 DIFF GEAR
  • Tamiya #54238 REINFORCED CUP SET
  • Tamiya #54390 DIFF PLATE
  • Tamiya #49300 THRUST BEARING

Alternatively, can I use M-08/TD4 hardware along with the plastic gear from the M-05?

The m-05 diff is the most modern but the ta03/manta ray diff works better as it has a tighter action.

No idea what result you will get by combining the parts in your list

The list contains only spare parts or hop-up options for the M-05 ball differential, nothing special, except for the diff screw, which comes from a different differential.

M-05 is probably as modern as it gets, there wasn't much development, aside transition from 2mm to 2.5mm.screwsnin Tamiya diffs. I'm not sure about the M-05 differential, but other Tamiya ball diffs allowed use of 2.5mm screw, so you should be able to use the #22029 TD4 set. The 2mm screw never really worked for me and it was easy to break the thrust bearing by overtightening.

In the list above, you forgot balls - M-05 uses 3mm, iirc, and those are available as steel or ceramic.

There's also a different option for the gear, 3racing makes 39T gear that fits M-05, but with 12 balls - that should provide smoother action thanks to more surface area, although in the case of FWD, that might be counter productive.

I want to stick with Tamiya parts, so the 3Racing gear isn’t suitable.

I’ll try the TD4 set or find a way to use the entire #22025.

That most likely won't work, the TD4 diff is too narrow for M-05. The diff joints have smaller diameter outside of bearings, so it cannot be solved with spacers, either (I've done that with FF03 plastic diffs, which have the same diameter over the entire length).
