Clearing out my shed due to house move, I found my sons Bush Devil RC car. I charged the battery, cleaned up the controller battery connections and put batteries in. All good until I tried to start the model. Regardless of on off switch position the car motor runs as soon as I connect the car battery. Is it the on off switch that is faulty although I did disconnect the switch and wired it direct the same thing happened. Not too bothered as the car is probably over 30 years old but thought it might be nice to donate to someone. Appreciate any help here I can find. Thanks.

Does it have a mechanical speed controller (MSC)? (looks sort of like this, see photo, borrowed photo from the internets)

In that case, the MSC could be "stuck" - clean the contacts and then try the car on top of something so that it doesn't run off again when you start it.

And always turn on the transmitter first, and then the car.

See if that helps, otherwise someone with more knowledge will correct me. :)

I will bet you the MSC is stuck as JimBear says. Clean it, make sure nothing is bent/broken and no debris jamming anything up.

The Bear and the Beard have the right of it.

The MSC might not even be stuck, it could just be that the throttle servo isn't centred or isn't connected properly.

It might be worth unplugging one of the wires that goes from the MSC to the motor (there are usually bullet plugs for this, depending on the age of the car) - that way you can confirm the radio is working properly and that the steering works and the throttle wiper moves correctly on the MSC and centres properly when at idle, without the car racing off on its own.

Thanks guys. Advice spot on. Cant believe it still works. Goes like the clappers. the original body died years ago and at some stage we bought the beetle shell.

It is a shame about the body though, they are quite rare now. The beetle shell suits it though.

Indeed. They're out of stock almost everywhere. I saw a NIB original Bush Devil  shell on the bay for £300.

Interesting.  They seem to be available from US Sellers…

I did see a couple pretty cheap but then you have the shipping on top which was around £30.
