My son has a Tamiya Hornet Evo and the rears are already severely worn out after 30 days of use. Is there a tire upgrade in terms of hardness?

I know newer cars have the hex hub, but I am no expert. These OEM rims use a key pin to hold the rim to spin the tire, so if I were to get new larger rims and tires I'm not sure what to select.

He likes to go off and on road. Is there a fair compromise between these terains in order to get better performance.

don't want to spend a ton of money, but curious what I can get him to tinker with an upgrade from what it came with.

can you please link me to suggestion of tires or tires and rim combinations that fit this buggy please?

thanks!

Welcome to Tamiyaclub.  Where in the world are you located?  The stock rear Hornet tires do get worn down quite fast, especially with some on-road running in there.

The EVO came with 12mm hex adapters to fit onto the stock setup - they are fairly long things that also use the pin to hold the wheel to the driveshaft.

Carson seems to have a popular all road/terrain set:

Kyosho has some rear tires that *might* fit on Hornet rear wheels:

I don't know if anyone here has done that swap.

Hi! You might try Grasshopper rear tyres. They are a straight swap onto those wheels, are a shallow paddle type design. Might be a better compromise, but ultimately spike tyres are what is needed off road and they wear super fast on road, so it's never going to be perfect either way.

When I only had the Grasshornet I used to run Grasshopper paddles or worn out Hornet spikes when running on tarmac and Hornet spikes for gravel/dirt.

If you switch to Wild One rear wheels you can fit Hotshot block tyres. They are better regarding wear than the Hornet tyres and actually pretty good for bashing about on loose surface as well.

My usual go to is Brat or Rough Rider wheels and tires, just on the back. It keeps the same aesthetic but they work on asphalt and loose terrain without wearing out quickly.

I put a set of Fast Attack Vehicle rears on my Frog. not a perfect fit as the rim sticks out about 1mm.
Going on 3 years and have held up great on the pavement, dirt, and short grass.

Are you guys swapping the pinion when you use these larger diameter tires?

Nope, just using the stock smaller pinion. It gets a little hot when using the larger pinion off road.

I'm using 2.2 buggy wheels for the kyosho Scorpion. 20250325_111256.jpg.d25b0d589b09f33f4991353e1c6fd225.jpg

Very cool look @MadAnt, did you stretch Oval blocks on in the rear? And are those Tamiya front tires?

Thanks.

The old oval bocks were painfully stretched on the 2.2 inch rims and the front tires are JConcepts Hotties. Now I have a different set of tires mounted, which are the Schumacher Block tires.
