Can anyone recommend a “pickup” RC style car/truck that is not a crawler?

Id love one like my sons fav hotwheels car (pic attached)

No hands on experience,  but always liked the Kyosho Outlaw Rampage (Pro, for more money,  but also more nice parts).

I think a little more information is needed to offer the best advice.

What kind of car are you looking for? You mentioned that you don’t want a crawler, for trucks the main other option would be a monster truck – but maybe that’s not quite right.

Are you looking for something fast and large, or something smaller and slower (that might be more suitable for a child?).

How much money do you want to spend?

And do you want to make yourself, or get a RTR?

There are a few options out there, but these days so many trucks are crawler style (or slow, super scale).

Personally I'd go custom, and drop a hardbody Clod on another chassis to make unique.

What Id like is a pickup that can zoom around the park & tarmac areas. Not so much a monster truck as I already have a Lunchbox, Clodbusyer & a Blackfoot (Although my Blackfoot us broken atm)

I love the Tamiya F150 but i guess thats too much of a crawler for what im after.    Otherwise I might try & get a tamiya & a seperate pickup body and try make it fir but id rather have a full Tamiya pickup if one exists?

1/10th scale and happy to build it.

Not that concerned with price, will oay if its a good kit.

Well, there's the old DT02 Nissan Titan... or you can wait for yet another re-release of the TA-02 Ford F-150.

If you're after a classic-style truck like that, though, Tamiya isn't your best bet. Kyosho makes a nice early 60s Chevy truck body for the Fazer chassis, it should fit other touring car chassis if you'd rather.

Or you can look at Pro-Line's classic Ford F100 truck body for the Traxxas Stampede; it's about the right wheelbase for a touring car or buggy chassis. The wheels would stick out a little, but that's fine for a truck.

I wish I knew of a Dodge Sweptline RC body like the Hot Wheels you posted. I've only ever seen scratch-built ones for crawlers.

Personally I'd get a Blackfoot body and place over a suitable chassis like the TL01 or TA02.

The chassis wheelbase would be slightly longer than the body, but that's fine as in reality they often are.

I don't think that Tamiya do many current pick up style trucks that fit what you want - I made one myself as there wasn't much else. This is a Pumpkin under and Quick Drive, but you can also use a MF01x.

I don't want a re-release of a ford ranger, but it would be great if Tamiya released something that had a similar design!

I've recently reconditioned my TA-02T for light bashing duties and it sounds like the sort of thing you want.  Hard to find them new now but you could make something of your own using a TA-01 or TA-02 chassis (or even TL-01, TT-01, TT-02 etc) and fitting a truck body over it.  The TA-01/02 is the best donor as with the right mix of parts you can make a variety of wheelbase options.

This post has loads of info if you're interested.  Ford F150 as labelled in the photos is a TA-02T: https://www.tamiyaclub.com/showroom_model.asp?cid=48983&id=2193

It was also available as a Chevy S10, a Toyota Prerunner, and a Desert Fielder, which is basically a Toyota Prerunner with different decals.  I think Team Bluegroove do an F150 body, not sure about the others.  Toyota Prerunner body is the same as the Hilux Monster Racer, and Chevy S10 is the same as the Asterion.

In a similar vein, the Asterion is also a good shout, again if you can find one.  It has the Chevy S10 body fitted over an XV-01T.  IIRC the wheelbase is the same as the standard XV-01 - you cut the arches differently on the S10 body to how you would on a TA-02T.  Otherwise I think the XV-01T has longer shocks and bigger tyres, possibly other differences to the regular XV-01 as well.  It is a blast to drive, the front weight bias means it drifts like a rally car and the enclosed belt drive is silky smooth.

As others have mentioned, the Kyosho Outlaw Rampage looks like a superb piece of kit, although I've not driven one.  It seems like someone took the design philosophy of the Hornet and actually went all-out to make it good.

I'm sure there are other race-inspired pickups out there similar to the Rampage, which don't go down the silly-wheels-stuck-out-the-side E-maxx path, but I don't know what they are off-hand.

If you wanted to get creative, you could build your own.  A Hornet would be a good starting point (with Brat wheels, perhaps) but any 2wd buggy would work.  Something like an SRB would let you adjust the wheelbase to suit your chosen truck shell, by making a new chassis plate.

JConcepts have a large range of modern and classic pickup truck bodies.  Mostly they are for monster trucks or things like E-maxxes, but as a bonus the JConcepts website lists the wheelbase against each body, so you see if it will fit your chassis before you buy.

I don't know how easy it would be to get hold of a clear body through, as I've only seen them pre-painted in black.

Depending on where you live and what you want to spend, the unpainted Landfreeder body is available at Tamico.de.

Tamiya have released various rough terrain oriented versions of their touring and rally chassis over the years, topped with pickup truck shells. One of these would give you the overall proportions of the Hotwheels car in the first post. If you can't find one in kit form, you can concoct your own with the touring chassis of your choice, a truck body and some suitable wheels/tyres.

Models you might look for, or look to for inspiration include the TA-02T Ford F-150 or Chevy S10, TL-01 Stadium Raider, TT-02T Sandshaker, XV-01T Asterion and so forth. Or if you prefer more of an on-road look, there is the TT-01E Ford SVT F-150 Lightning.
