To make it easier to find, I'm putting my MB01 tinkering into this build thread. It might be interesting for people who also like to tinker with their MB01.

I bought this used "maisto tech" 1:16 VW pickup truck for €10. I didn't need the chassis or the 40 MHz technology, but I liked the body and planned to mount it on an M-chassis; my MB01 might be suitable. I just needed to shorten the wheelbase. This is how this little low-budget project came into being.

I needed an extra short wheelbase, shorter than the "S" version at 210mm. I was able to shorten it to 199mm. This is what I did:

1. reversed the front wishbones.
2. drilled a hole into the lower wishbone to screw in a long ball head screw serving as shock mount.
3. shortened the uprights by 2mm where the steering links are attached.
4. changed the position of the steering links.

The same should be possible at the rear, but there might be problems with the dogbones being too angled. You could try using CVDs (single or double cardan joints). This would shorten the wheelbase by a further 11mm.

I've made some progress with my VW T1 double cab pickup. I replaced the black plastic with Lexan windows, painted a few spots silver, added a few stickers, and lowered the entire body by about 1cm. Now, only the shorty lipos fit in the 199mm MB01 chassis.

And this is how it looks now:

Thanks for the nice feedback! :)

I opted for different and quieter electronic equipment. I installed THW 1060, a quieter servo and a quieter Motor. I even found a way to mount the power switch.

The GT Tuned seems to be a good fit for the long gear ratio. The first short test drive was a lot of fun.

Ready to accessorise now 🎉

Yes, the potential for accessories and additional equipment is definitely there. 😎

In the meantime, a panda has taken possession of the small pickup truck.
