Fil is doing an awesome job with this contest, now in its fourth (?) year.
The rules are simple and fun.  He has chosen The Hornet as the car that everyone will need in order to compete.

Check it out!

Ok

I want too, but yet I don't want too. I have enough Hornets and Grasshoppers right now and I don't want to modify them anymore.

There will be an update today on rules for those taking part. There has been some debate about the use of the Hornet Evo kit and other models like the Rising Fighter, Grasshopper 2 and the DT01.

The PBSRC gets quite the following every year and it is fun to follow along even if you are not the fastest in the group!

Happy to help answer any questions that you all might have?

Will probably be a shortage of bodyshells in the coming months as most records are likely to be achieved while sliding along on their roofs

I'm going to strongly reccomend @Pintopower s wing mount for anyone participating. Or, fit a Grasshopper shell.

I'm not much of a speed runner myself, I'm just trying to save people some broken parts.

That actually sounds like a lot of fun, and I do have a Hornet/Hopper (or 3) sitting around...

...but the only paved area I have to drive is my front sidewalk, which is only about 60 feet long. I suppose I could run on the street; if I do it during the day when no one is around, and I can dodge all the lawn-care trucks. Maybe I'll try a run or two this week and see how it goes.

@markbt73 finding somewhere to run at speed is part of the challenge. I have tried several places over the years and finding a obstacleless run space for the Grasshopper should be interesting 😁

For two of the classes 3d printed parts are not allowed.😢

I have an idea for how to build a Hornet or Grasshopper for high speed on road use. In the past I've turned a grasshopper into an on-road car, that part is not hard. I have an idea of what I can do for gearing and mounting a different Tamiya body is not a big issue. I even have a set of belted tires. I just don't want buy another Hornet or Grasshopper and then track down some old fast brushed motors that are no longer in production, or purchase a brushless system for this one time use along with other things that need to be bought.

Oh well.

Weird, I think if you're going to break stuff for a youtube contest it may as well be cheap 3D printed parts.

Fil keeps the first two classes limited to enjoy even if you just have a chassis and a couple of motors you can still run and have fun.

The open class allows for all sorts of crazy stuff and the guys there make things fly and create some brilliant designs.

Grasshopper parts are pretty cheap if it all goes wrong too!

Fil talks a lot about how the Evo probably wouldn’t have an advantage over the standard Hornet/Grasshopper.  I couldn’t disagree more. In my experience, stability is one of the biggest barriers to speed so the IRS of the Evo along with the lower unsprung weight would probably be a huge help.  He says that a conversion to the Evo suspension would be allowed so sadly, that may need to happen to keep the thing on the road at high velocity.

In the meantime, are there any affordable dampers that are known to control the stock suspension at all? :D

All right, let's do this. I already have a dozen projects going at once, what's one more? Old pile of parts assembled into a Grasshopper, along with a Trinity Speed Gems Onyx 14 turn double, a Dynamite Tazer ESC rated for 10 turns, and a Robinson 18 tooth steel pinion.

The plan is to do this without spending one red cent, using only stuff I already have. I can't stand brushless motors, so I'll be running in either brushed or open, depending on how silly I get with the modifications. You might think open class with this motor is foolish, but here's the thing: it's not going to be about raw power. It's going to be about stability, and making sure you can use the power you've got. I'll probably still lose spectacularly, but I'll do it with style.

I like your setup,  "scrapper" project made from spare stuff sitting around, bonus points for using old tech. Like you I'm not a big brushless guy even if I understand it's benefits.

I'm interested in seeing the stuff people come up with.

Also, is bolting my 302 Windsor V8 powered Bronco to the bottom of a Grasshopper legal for the open class?

Works for me. I'm bolting mine to my 84 trans am. A little more pep than a 380 lol

Jokes aside this should be a fun speed run challange to watch. Wonder if anyone will post thier top speed while still on thier wheels?

This is very tempting as I love my Grasshopper(s). I rebuild my rere into an EVO but still have the rear end the rere came with originaly and that was already used on a brushed speedrun attempt.

But this time I'd like to go brushless as my LiHV batteries are way better than my regular Lipo's.

The only big minus is that June and July are really really hectic months.
