Hi all,

I've driven my rally beetle around on the camping last weekend. It was running very well on the roads that connected various plots there. Being a yellow beetle it attracted quite the attention.
But, I found its on-grass capabilities rather poor. Every dent in the field was a mayor problem as the diffs sent all the power to the wheel not touching the ground. It got stuck numerous times.
Also the body took quite a bit of a beating.

So, I was wondering; would a Tamiya Wild One be better suited for driving on grass? The beetle may be better off on the road after all.
Like to hear your opinions on the 'wild one'.

Thanks.

Kind regards,
Erno

Wild One will be slightly better as it will have about twice the ground clearance, but unless the grass is particularly short it might still not be what you want.

Best car for almost any length grass I haveowned was my DT03 on blitzer beetle wheels, so maybe keep the beetle theme going and get a Blitzer Beetle?

For grass you want big tires, low gearing, and ideally 4wd but it's not always necessary. A monster truck (Lunchbox, Blackfoot) would be ideal, maybe a Blitzer Beetle as its more or less a Stadium truck.

The Wild One is a neat buggy, but it's rather fragile and finding a new rollcage isn't easy if yours gets beaten up. Most 1/10 buggies can only run on low grass at best.

I like a crawler/trail truck for camping. They’ll go just about anywhere, and the moderate speed and long runtimes make them ideal hiking companions. I’ve taken my Element Enduro on some nice long hikes and explored some gorgeous trails with it.

Now, if you want a little speed at the campground, something comparable to the MF-01X, a CC-02 might just be the ticket. They do well enough with open diffs, and handle surprisingly well for a solid axle chassis.

I took my CC02 camping last summer.  It was great.  As a family we would hike in the AM, and then after lunch I would go back and drive on any cool terrain I found.  Lots of trails, rocks, and one stream.  It was a new thing every day and the CC02 was a champ!

I will not suggest cars for you since there are plenty of suggestions already.

I have to warn you about attention RC attract, especially the kids. Kids tends to want to race the car, running after them. The problem is when you run out of road and need to stop or change direction, they steam in at full speed stepping right over your car. I had it happening to me even by my own kids.

Another thing is never lend your car to others, especially kids, but most non RCers are the same. They think it is funny ramming the thing straight into a tree or wall at full speed.

Should the worst happen, the parents tends to go "What is the fuss? It is just a toy."

I got that kind of attention on a recent caravan park holiday driving it around the roads in the park, with kids wanting to see if it can go faster than them (race) and wanting to try it out. I just pick the car up, said there is a problem with it and needs fixing.

Then I found a quiet beach to leave some marks. Did got the attention of some dogs though!

The car I brought was this one (cheap and almost disposable) but will probably not suit your terrain.

GF-02, Monster Beetle/Blackfoot, that 6x6 thing everyone likes, Clodbuster or a low geared stadium truck platform or anything with big enough tires and low gearing are what I suggest. I know what everyones idea of what grass is, is different, I'm assuming the worst case for a normal cut lawn. Over here we mostly have thick grass and even with a low cut, it's too thick for buggies.

Meh crawler/trail all the way.  Couple packs and you can literally go miles. Or heck just crawl over everyone's stuff.  Agree with crowds too most people just admire big scaler trail vehicles, and you can deliver things with a trailer and just sit in a folding chair and go all over the place.  Chances are someone will have the full scale version.

I have everything from 1:24 to Hornets to 6S bashers, scale trail is chillaxin and good rc general population promotion.  Funny enough, a couple second high gear burst on a 3S TRX will demonstrate to any curious kid you're going slow on purpose.

Alot of great suggestions here. I'm a fan of the Blitzer series of chassis for 2WDs, and with minor mods can suit various terrain with enough ground clearance as pictured. As also mentioned, Lunchbox/Midnight Pumpkins are great grass runners also, fitting a Beetle body to either is easy. Once again great ground clearance on both, super reliable and easy to work on. Pictured here is a Blitzer chassis with Wild Willy 2 wheels.

For camping, you need fire resistant Monster Beetles!

If terrain is unknown, my Sundays MB is always a good choice. Fun on grass, sand and dirt. With Leds the fun doesn´t stop at the evening...

Found the DT03 to be quite a versatile chassis with a bullet proof drivetrain (with bearings and a steel pinion..), and if I'm taking one car on holiday with me, that's my choice (with a couple of 3s lipos, but if like me you think storing them with their charge bag in the caravan oven, thinking they're safe, remember to take them out before your other half pre heats the oven for tea....😳

Big wheels with brushless and 5s not a problem -

I used FTX Bugsta, but obviously the Aqroshot fit.

If there's a beach, fling on some paddles, and away you go

Thanks for all the replies. I have to think this over. Maybe I just bring my beetle after all. I'm not much into crawlers or bigfoot appearances. I just need something that can run around the camping while dodging kids ;-)

I have noticed the desire to race my car. What I did was made it turn around and come back to me. Then I'd just pick it up. Or let it roll to a a slow stop at the side of the road. Preferably into some bushes. I did not have a bad incident yet, but I did notice the desire to run after the car. Strange really. Thanks for the warning.
