Hi all,

So my son just busted the rear upright on his TD2 Astute and literally everyone in the UK is out of stock of the C parts trees.  Does anyone know of an alloy replacement part available anywhere, I haven't been able to find anything myself.

Cheers

Get the carbon reinforced XV-01 rear uprights. You need to mod the kit wishbones a little and fit DB01 universal drive shafts, but it's worth doing as it fixes this weakness permanently in the TD2/4 chassis. 0C28709E-D190-4FA3-890E-8C1C56659A91.thumb.jpeg.dc97f02d51a985e2c7b83490a7447b24.jpegIMG_0996.thumb.jpeg.f0a05aa10ff7d962f7282414f8f0f226.jpeg

Thanks, annoyingly I just bought him the TD2/4 universal shafts.  So getting another set will be a bit of a kick in the teeth

I could try the super Astute hubs but seems a bit of a risk to spend the cash to find out it's no good. Can anyone else confirm this?

I guess the relative unpopularity of the kit has resulted in limited upgrade parts being available 🙁

So back to the xv-01 solution, do you know what length turnbuckle I would need and I assume it's the rear universal shadt I should get.

Thanks for the help so far.

The TD rear upright is a rather unique design, which makes it even more exasperating that they are weak.

Unlikely the Super Astute / Madcap rear uprights fit. I suspect they have toe, too, which you want to avoid, as toe on the TD chassis is set by the angle of the wishbone pivot, not in the rear upright (the 'correct' way of doing it).

For fitting the XV uprights you don't need new turnbuckles. You will need:

XV01 carbon reinforced rear uprights
DB-01 REAR universals
XV-01 N parts for the spacers and bearing adapter (or use a full size 1350 bearing as I did and the TRF buggies did)
Buggy Hex conversion hex hubs. The DB-01 universal is thicker than TD, so either drill out the plastic kit TD hexes to fit or buy the fancy alloy hexes for the DB-01.

It sounds like a ball-ache and a faff but it really does fix the issue 100% - Ive had some horrendous racing crashes with both my TD2 and TD4 with this mod and they just do not break any more similar to modern AE / X-Ray buggies etc.

Hi, I finally got around to doing this mod but I think I am missing something.  I used a full size 1350 bearings as you suggested but when I test assembled the upright with the shaft there is 1-2 mm play between the face of the bearing and pin for the alloy hex hub.

sorry I can't seem to attach the photo I took

Ah, you are nearly there - you need a spacer between the outer face of the bearing and the pin. If you hunt around on your TD2 parts trees you might find what you need.

What's the difference between TF2/4 and DB01 CVDs? Swing shaft length or just the wheel axle?

The axle is thicker and longer. It also uses the fun-ending grub screw method of keeping the pin in place rather than the spring / ring method.

So that means that @LazerBen could just use TD2/4 CVDs with XV-01 rear wheel axles? (19804648)

This might be possible - only advantage is you get the nicer axle and still have to shell out for two sets of CVDs.

reminds me I meant to move the double cardan shafts I have on my 201 to my TD2….
