Made there own off-road rally circuit?

Reason I ask is there's a farmer down the road from us who is prepared to rent a good size plot of land and has said it's OK to build a circuit on it [:D]

If anyone has any photo's or links to post up so that I can get a few ideas, that'll be great.

Cheers

Cool!!

What sort of size plot you talking?

The only problems I can really see are...

Who's going to pay the rent?

Who's going to do the work to build the circuit?

Which part of Lincs you in??

I've been thinking of doing this myself for a while - got an acre of land I just do nothing with. The only thing thats stopped me is cost.

I could just scrape the grass off (no small task inself) but then basically it would just be a mud bath for 9mths of the year. So I looked into various surfaces from astro turf to compacted clay but they all soon shot up into the £1000s for any descent sized track and thats not really including tool hire for any landscaping required.

All that said I'm still toying with the idea, so I'll watch thread with interest [:)]

Hmm, a spare acre of land eh Chris - organise a Tamiya Club meet there for a week, make it "bring a shovel" and see what happens [;)]

Neighbours complaining about noise??

What neighbours? Problem with holding an event there is three fold

1. No car parking or access except through my house

2. no toilets or electricity

3. I don't want you bunch of reprobates knowing where I live [;)]

id="quote">id="quote">That's not a problem, we can extend your drive after we've finished building the track, so we can fit all our cars, Transit vans, caravans and campers on there.

I built a track in our back garden while we were renovating our old cottage. This was before the garden was landscaped and paved/lawned etc.

Even though this looks quite big it was still too small for a proper race track. The lap time was only about 15 seconds in a quick car and about 20-25 in a stock 540'd car. The track was also too narrow, it was between 4-6 feet wide but ideally you'd need something twice that width - especially in the areas furthest from the control point. This track above took up an area of 66 feet x 35 feet. I think you'd need something twice this area for a decent track.

This track was also very rough (loose hardcore for most of the length) and sustained running over it broke just about every car I had..... You needed buggies with long suspension travel and very supple springing. The thundershots coped well with it but not much else did.

If I was building a proper circuit I'd also make sure it had run off areas and 'soft' edging. Mine was lined with railway sleepers that destroyed anything that touched them.

Some years ago (before I got my first car), a guy who used to ride motorbikes up in the woods where we used to BMX brought along a Wild Willy, and bit by bit more people got cars.

They then decided to clear out a section of the woods and build a dirt race track, with jumps, tabletops, berms etc - it was the same woods (and close by) featured in the middle of my Twin Det movie.

By the end they had proper signage, electric starting lights, and used to get a big crowd of people going down there with proper organised meets, it was really fun. Of course in those days I was too poor to join in, but the circuit they made was pretty good.

It got used for one summer I think, then was kind of left alone after that - to this day unless you knew it was there you wouldn't be able to recognise a track any more, the woods has pretty much reclaimed it.

Memories, memories...

There's a few of these gems around. Near to me there is a massive BMX track, it's taken me over a year to find it; I finally got there a couple of weeks back after a tipoff from a local nitro owner. It doesn't seem to be used much by the BMX'ers any more, ideal for the bigger cars, but most of the jumps are too big for the Tamiya kits to handle.

Unfortunately it's not as easy to make your own track these days, as councils are careful with their land in light of people claiming against them for accidents. I tried looking into "borrowing" some land off the local council, but they want indemnity insurance and lots of form filling before they will even consider it.

I just bought my own home in Oct. I have a perfect little section on the one side of the home that I am going to be making into a mini race track. Mostly for my Losi Mini T's and Tamiya Rock Buster and Max Climber. I want to make it big enough that I can drive 1/10th on too.
