Hi all,

I have had my clod for a little while now. I have replaced the squeaky kit shocks with the lovely gold Tamiya ones. The motors are still kit standard issue. I am happy with the standard chassis (at least for the near future).

What set up do other Clod' owners run and what is the best pair of motors to use that will give good pulling torque without sacrificing run time.

Thanks

Hi Clive

Concensus here seems to be the Kyosho Magnetic Mayhem 21-turn jobbies. They come in forward and reverse versions, have bags of torque, and the one in my Blitzer Beetle doesn't give much less run-time than the standard silver-can.

Cheers

I'm with David on the motor choice.

Alternatively give yourself loads of really low speed torque with the kit motors and lower the pinion size (need to get an adaptor-TTR make one and you can probably get one through Fusion.)[;)]

Hi Peter and David,

Should have mentioned I fully ballraced mine.

Peter, showing my ignorance on Clods' but which are the anti rotation brackets? I know what they do but which ones is it and where do I get metal ones from? Or do you have to make them yourself?

David, I have seen the mag mayhems mentioned in nearly everything, I presume any decent model shop will stock them.

Thanks for that.

Hmmm... not so sure. In theory they're available through Ripmax, but folks seem to have trouble getting them and order from Tower instead. Got both of mine s/h so can't really comment from experience...

I tried, failed miserably. The guy I last spoke to at Ripmax hadn't even heard of them.

Most of the stores I tried here hadn't stocked them for ages either.

They're $20 a pop at Tower at the mo, plus $13 fast shipping ($18 for 2)

2nd hand or Tower seems to be the best bet. However, I've asked the guy at my LHS to find out if he can get them and for what price, I'll let you all know if he comes up with the goods, he is normally pretty good with imports.

Well , dont have much info for you as far as what when and where with the motors the other guys have brought up . Though on a side note TC is the first place I ever herd of the Magnetic Mayhem motors ( may just be a UK thing ) . Anyways as far as the survay . My Clod is still running the stock chassis ( Refuse to get any other frame , why trash a whoal kit just for the axels ) . Im running a set of the traxxes aluminum oil filled shocks ( I think they are made for the T/E maxx ) . Full bearings , two 14x2 Trinity Speed Gems ( the Onyx series , one rebuilt and broke in for reverse running ), stock gearing ,couple of 7 cell 2000mgh ni-cad packs for it , Novac Super Rooster esc . Standard aftermarket chrome rims and tires ( just a butthair bigger than stock rims and tires ) that youll see on allmost every Clod . Oh and got rid of the stock "scoop" that they stuck on the hood and put a blower from a 1/12 67' corvette kit I have in its place ( looks 100 times better than that goofy scoop ). Though I did salvage the stock scoop and stuck it on my old Blackfoot body that I run on my Lunchbox . Deffinately gotta say the dual 14 turn Trinitys makes the Clod literaly jump off the line from a dead stop and has the pulling power of a tank , but the run times are definately sacrifised for the power im pushing , on average about 5 to 7 minuts before the 2000mgh battery dumps . But for that 5 to 7 minut run time the performance is deffinately worth all the recharging .

Just a quick note on the anti rotation brackets. The stock plastic ones do break quite easily under heavy load but they were supposed to. They were designed to be the weakest link so that other more expensive/harder to replace parts weren't broken instead. Bear in mind that this truck was designed to be a heavy weight back yard bruiser for kids......not us hop-up to the max freaks. [:I][;)]

APM used to make aluminium replacements but to stand the chance of ripping up your trannies under heavy load. They are hard to get but do come up regularly on Ebay.com.

On motors I use Mag Mayhems, Trinity Max's and ESP Power ups....all give better performance over stock without much effect on run time. I have fitted bearing kits and ESC's.....Dont forget some run time will be lost on the wastage running through the Mechanical speed controller.......its inefficient!!

i made my own metal anti rotation brakets, all you need is some metal (i used some ali), a junior hacksaw, a vice, a drill and a file.

i found the only thing that made the stock ones break was clipping the underside of the gearbox on low obstacles. once they break the steering goes all over the place! clod gearboxes are tough so having metal ones shouldnt make much difference.

you can still find proper machined ones on ebay, but last i saw of them it was a tenner for 2 i think, mine didnt cost me a penny!

Try cranking some real torquey motors through the system though....they'll break up pretty easy. Mind you most clodders running mega motors are not using the stock suspension set up anyway.

Hmm , well like I said on mine Im running two Onyx Speed Gems2 motors ( 14x2 ) for about five years now and have yet to break anything on the suspention . The only thing not stock is my shocks but other than that everything els is bone stock on the suspention . Guess Ive just been lucky so far by the sounds of it ...
