Haven't had a heated debate for ages so I'll start one......

I owned a Clod up until recently but sold it cos' I thought it was rubbish (in stock form) - I haven't changed my mind - for the price they sell at in stock form you can build yourself a far better crawler from alternative parts. Hence my Clod went to fatboyslim and I built thunderfoot. The only parts you can keep are the axles so why bother? the axles themselves are **** expensive even in second hand form. My old buggy parts work just as well and cost a fraction of the price [:0][:D]

The stock Clod has so many bad points I can't believe Tamiya managed to get away with selling them for so long:

1) No articulation - average buggy has better!

2) Too high a CoG

3) Too heavy a shell for such high vehicle

4) Differentials?!

5) Stupidly small wheelbase

which all resulted in:

1) Poor crawling/climbing ability

2) Rolls over backwards so easily on even small slopes

3) Rolls over sideways quite easily too

4) Lift a wheel and lose traction

5) Difficult to control at speed and with 4WS why worry about having too long a wheelbase?

I reckon they look good and people convince themselves that they are good but truth is that compared to a decent homebuilt truck they just can't compare at anything - thunderfoot can slaughter a stock Clod in Mud, rocks, hills, water or snow and it cost less to build than a second hand stock Clod off ebay. I also prefer a shaft driven truck anyway as they look more to scale. They might not perform as well in outright modified form compared to a modifed clod based machine but they come close enough for most people. Give me a TXT or Jugg anyday over a Clod.[}:)][;)][:0]

OH and you would have thought if I design/build my own truck using nothing more than a hacksaw, vice and drill with parts from B&Q that Tamiya could have done a little better with the 'new' Clodbuster than simply changing the colour of a few parts!

Given the TXT already existed, you'd have thought a fair bit of that could have been used - The TXT was alledgedly partly designed by a mod clod fan, so why not get him back again!

I much prefer shaft drives too, watch this space for a TLT that doesn't torque twist [:D]

..................nope sorry..........I'm not going there[;)]

Can't agree more....the stock clod is a struggle, and, if you read the blurb on the box probably contravenes the trades descriptions act especially when it comes to claims of what it can do[:0]

I think the popularity of the Clod comes from the fact that it was probably one of the first of the genre? and it is interesting that both the Jugg and the TXT have bombed as far as sales are concerned in comparison with Cloddie.

Have you got a bodyshell on Thunderfoot yet?

haven't you been watching my latest videos!! The 'snow crawling' one shows a shell on it and there is another crawling vid in my showroom movie section. The land rover shell sadly didn't last long enough to be photographed.....a 3.5kg truck rolling down a pile of rocks tends to crunch ABS shells quite badly........especially kamtec ones :-(

The pajero shell it is running with at the moment is incredibly strong for an ABS shell - how typical, it comes off a cheap chinese toy yet proves to be virtually indestructable if a little heavy.

Sorry Ian I can't get any of the video clips to play on my PC from anybody.....guess I'm missing some software.

the wrecker project looks cool. I've sent you a pick of a clod based version although I'm sure you have your own ideas.

Good luck

Chris
