hi im wondering if it is possible to fit the 7 inch wheelsid="size6">id="red"> on the tamiya twin detonator.

the wheels are too small and dont give enough ride height for my liking so i want it big REALLY BIGid="size6">id="red"> that way i can go anywhere.

7 inches compared to the pewny 4 1/2 inches on my tdid="size6">id="size5">id="red">

if you can give me any help PLEASE DO

I think that even if you could fit the 7 inch wheels, the gearing would be way out and the motors wouldn't be able to cope, the performance would suffer.id="navy">id="size1">

Its not the size that counts but what you do with themid="red">.......[;)]

I'm running 2.2" wheels (4.5" diameter tyres) on my crawler and it'll beat most stock monster trucks and many modifieds at most things.

Big tyres just put more strain on transmission, suspension components, driveshafts and axles etc. They take more power to turn and therefore you get less run time from your battery. You'd need to seriously lower you gearing which you can't do with the TD as it is quite limited.

If you go this route I'd try and fit a geared reduction drive unit on the motors. They are about an inch long so if you have enough room and they won't interfere with your tyres/steering than you'd be able to handle the bigger tyres with ease. It would also slow down the truck to give more scale speed and give you more torque for better climbing ability.

I have one of these units fitted to my crawler and it is a 3:1 reduction unit made by graupner for electric planes. All you need to do is get your pinions drilled out to suit the 4mm output shafts as the stock tamiya pinions are for 3mm shafts.

If you think 2.2" tyres won't allow you to go anywhere then this should convince you otherwise:

That has 4" clearance under the chassis and 2" under the diffs which is more than a TXT, Jugg or even a Clod all of which run 6.5" tyres.

Here is a pic of the reduction drive units fitted to the motor in my crawler, as you can see they aren't that big so might well fit in your TD? It is the blue thing mounted directly to the front of the motor. As you can see it simply screws to the motor and then you attach it to the gearbox as you would the normal motor. The reduction unit has the same screw holes in the front as the motor does. This is fitted straight onto a stock thundershot gearbox here.

The graupner reduction units are about £20 each in the UK but I've seen the same or similar units in the US for less than $25!

Just go to your local model shop and ask them if the stock reduction units for R/C aircraft. They should be able to advise which ones will fit onto the 540 motors. Just make sure the overall length including the motor doesn't stick out too far from your chassis so that it obstructs your steering/tyres etc. It is worth a try because a 3:1 reduction or more will allow you to turn the bigger tyres using the existing gearing in the TD. It will retain your runtime from the same battery pack as well. You'll still get premature wear on your driveline components with the savage size wheel/tyres.

One other thing, Savage wheels have a 17mm hex I think? Tamiya hex is 14mm so you will need an adaptor.

PS. My crawler above only cost £100 to build which is cheaper than buying a TD new from the model shop......[;)][:P]

but where did you sped £100 on a crawler as i might get one of those aswell...........my mum and dad will have a fit but it is my money!!!!!

if you could give me a list of where to get it from or even how much you would sell your for??

if they are that cheapo then i will get both but did your crawler come with contoler and motor and that sort of thing though

Okay Ian you beat me on the gearbox clearence though, I've only got 1.8" there!!

West Coast, that crawler Ian (Mud4Fun) built was a home built job out bits and pieces he had lying about!!

If you take a peek in my showroom there's a few pics of my home made clod based crawler.

This I built using no more than a Hacksaw,mini vice, pop-riveter and a drill!!

It's very satisfying whenyou finally get the thing running and it does what you wanted!!

LOL Fatboyslim I was talking about STOCK Clod, TXT or Jugg not your modified version!!!

BTW Nice pics Andy but the track width is too narrow, those tyres need to be a bit wider spaced to look correct - just my opinion? Mind you that pic confirms that a reduction unit would indeed fit on the motors without interfering too much with the tyres?

Main trouble with stock Maxx rims would be the offset.

Slinging Clod rims on it would sort it - you'd need some TTR wideners to convert the drive method though - Clod rims uses 5 pin system, not hex.

If you mean the 6 wheel thing, it should work, I never tried it though, and it cost one Blackfoot Extreme and one Twin Det - the rest was made at work

Hey Twinset it would be cool to have had that 6 wheeler steer front and rear with fixed center. I know you have scraped that project but if you had an open diff in the center it would just pivot on corners.[;)]
