hi, i recently got a good deal on a 12v wicks drill, the motor says 12v 550, are all 550's the same or should i be looking for a 7.2v drill?

The motor will be fine, I have used a 550 14.4v cordless drill motor in thunderfoot for a year with no problems. It will happily run on 7.2v but just gives better performance with higher voltages. I tend to run 8.4v.

These motors often come with a torque ring on them. This is a thin ring of metal wrapped around the can, apprx 1mm thick. Leave it on as it gives more torque - don't ask me how it works though!

Many of these motors will not have a flat on the motor shaft so you may need to grind one on yourself for use with the pinion. (My cordless drill motor was bolted into a reduction unit and used a press on pinion. I bought a puller kit for about £8 from my LHS to remove it to avoid damaging the motor)

They are also slightly longer (10-15mm) than most modern 540 sized motors so you need to make sure you have enough clearance for them. That torque ring also add maybe 2mm to the overall diameter of the motor can too.

Probably yes, but that depends also on the gearing, car and terrain, just try it and if it start stalling or gets too hot, immediately stop.

Cheers
