Right, time to start gathering the electrics for my Maxx crawler.

I was thinking of two motors, wired in series.

Anyone tried a couple of silver can 540's in a maxx that way?

It needs to be slow, climb over stuff and the diameter of the motors can't exceed a normal 540 although length isn't that important.

Key words; SLOW & CRAWLER [:D]

Any thoughts/experiences most welcome

I'd go with a couple of Graupner Speed 600 Ecos. Loads of torque (more than a 55t lathe motor) using a slightly longer 550 can plus under £15 each. Got one fitted to my Pajero and I think it's great!

If this is a shafty Andy then I'd be tempted to use a pair of 480 aircraft motors with the reduction units. These give good torque and long run times due to teeny current draw but are also much lighter in weight than running two 540 sized motors. (Minimising your CoG) They wouldn't be man enough on their own but a pair will do fine, especially thru reduction units bolted onto an existing low geared transfer box. You just need to make some adaptor plates for them as the mounting hole PCD is much smaller than a normal 540.

Drop me an email with your address and I'll post you out one of my 480's if you want to play around with it?

I've got a pair fitted with 4:1 reduction drives. Stuff that onto a gearbox running 25:1 and you'll have 100:1 overall gearing which will be really slow and mighty torquey! (Thunderfoot is currently 65:1)

Cheers,

Ian

Hey chaps

Yeah, it's for the Big Maxx

I'm toying with 9/72 pinion/spur, then whatever is already in the Maxx gearbox.

It's got 2 ranges, so one should be fine.

Ideally, would like to stick with 540 size mounting, as run time is no biggie because it has twin battery mounts if needed, and it's just less hassle [:D]

Could always get a couple more Willy Rash reducers if need be.......

Yes I wired my Jugg and TXT in series, the Jugg has the stock 540's and it works well, pretty slow with lots of torque. I imagine it would work well in the maxx as well.[;)]

Graupner makes reductions for 540 sized motors which have also a normal output axle diameter so you don't need to drill up pinions and have a wider variety of motors you can use.

I'm not a big fan of Graupner, but I have one of the reduction units from Graupner in an XC, and it's great. Hardened steel gears, roller bearings, rigid GRP housing and it's quite dust- and splashproof too. Same diameter housing and 1/8" output axle (same as 540). 3.8 or 4.0 ratio (don't remember).
