as much as i enjoy running my little gear max climber, its still not a "go anywhere" truck and it does tend to get stuck easy. does anyone know any mods to improve this car?. how do i go about locking up diffs?.

cheers,

james.

Locking the diffs, especially the middle will make a huge difference couple of different ways too.

Middle diff: bolt it together - either drilling holes thru the plate for nut and bolt(2 180degree opposed) or 1 bolt right thru the centre with some hot glue between plates and gear for good measure.

Front&Rear diff: either - Chemical Metal in the casing between gears is a permanent fix though

- Cotton wadding (like cushion stuffing) this can be removed

- milliput in between gears which i believe can be removed

Lots of other mods one of best is increase wheelbase with longer turnbuckles for links and longer dampers.

ah cheers for the advice chaps. so far all i've done is lock the centre diff - boy does that make a difference!. its got much better drive and it pulls monster wheelies now forwards and backwards!. the next step is adding the extra servo for 4ws, then i may lock anther diff and eventually i'll attempt to lenghten the suspension.

fun!,fun!,fun!.

thanks for the advice,

james.

Why did Tamiya choose to install a centre diff in these trucks ?.

I can't see the point of it, what's the idea behind it ?.

I'm going to start building mine soon, have bearings for it and will lock the centre diff and possibly the rear one also.

People talk about using glue etc to lock the diff, is it simply a case of glueing the three little bevel gears to the centre one to stop them all turning ?.

The centre diff is included because Tamiya just took the rear ball diff and transmission out of the TA-04 tourer and put it in the middle of the TLT chasssis. Keeps development costs down if they reuse parts.

i aggree, whats the point in the centre diff?. tamiya would of been better off fitting a slipper clutch, that way you can just keep adjusting it to suit the way you want to drive it each time. its much more fun to drive with that diff locked too. when i lock up the rear axle diff i,m going to use milliput - hopefully it will lock it up enough and not be too permanent.......

First thing I did was to add some Wild Willy 2 Wheels. 2 sets of rears will do it. This gives it a huge increase in off road ability as the wheels extend well past the bumpers etc. Plus they look real trick.

I locked the center diff up with a cardboard spacer ring I made myself. Does the job and is easily reversable.

I also extended the chasis suspaension bars from stock and spaced out the dogbones using rubber tubing to stop them falling out. Give me a few mins to post some pics

The expensive 'proper' way of locking the centre diff would be to fit a spool designed for the TA-04. The cheap and cheerful way is just to remove the balls and screw it up rather than gluing it. It gives no centre diff but allows it to act as a slipper clutch under extreme loads. Easy to convert back to normal as well.

Ok Some Pics as Promised. The last one is how much over extened the standard suspension links are without the dogbones falling out. However the photos with my MC crushing an Integra is not extended at the moment.

Well I just got my max climber. I'm gonna run it stock for a few days to see if it is fun. Then locking the middle will be in order. What motor should I use? I got a few hot 27 turn motors just laying around or should I use a 19 turn chamelion pro 2?

well, i've now locked up the rear diff and i've spent the last few days trying it. to be honest i dont think its changed it much so i might swap that diff over with the front one. i'm more than happy with performance from the stock motor, but i am using a tamiya 3600 battery pack and that gives it some real power - and very long run times. if i was going to change anything else then i would probably change the gearing - gear it down even lower - bigger pinion gear?.

bags of fun car!.
