Always liked that bod, so thought I'd do something similar for the racing Clod

Got an old Parma Mustang, and got busy

It was a bit of a half-hearted job really, I lost the

decal sheet a while back, and the outside of the shell

is quite scratched, but here's the start to finish [:D]

First off, thouroughly wash the shell and dry it well,

just to remove fingerprints, mould release and grease from the inside

Find a mould line on the shell, that crosses another, to use as a start point

for the masking tape

pjyb001.jpg

Then, find an end point

pjyb002.jpg

Tape a strip of masking tape from one point to the other

(on the outside)

pjyb003.jpg

So it goes from here

pjyb004.jpg

To here

pjyb005.jpg

On the inside, lay down more tape, using the strips on the outside as a guide

I find it easier to do this way than to try to get a symmetrical pattern just by laying tape on the inside

pjyb006.jpg

Make sure the tape is right into the corners

The handle of a scalpel works great for this, as does a teaspoon handle

pjyb007.jpg

Find a second mould line intersection, and repeat procedure as above, tapering the masking to a point

pjyb008.jpg

Tape off from the rear, using the same method

pjyb009.jpg

Trim excess tape off, for later

pjyb010.jpg

Slap a liberal dose of liquid mask over the bits you want yellow

I use Bob Dively's, thankfully, they've improved the aroma[:D]

It comes off easier when thick, and I always scrape the

brush along the edges of the shell,

just to build it up there too

(It dries clear)

pjyb012.jpg

Cover the body post holes from the outside, using the excess tape from earlier

This stops any paint going out thru the holes, onto the outside of the bod

pjyb013.jpg

If the shell doesn't have an overspray film, mask around perimeter

pjyb014.jpg

Then, tape a bin-liner or similar to the masking tape, making sure every part of the bag's edge is sealed

(to stop overspray getting in)

pjyb015.jpg

Set up a spray booth [;)]

pjyb016.jpg

Give the shell a light coating of black

Dark colours first, so as not to 'shade' the lighter ones

And if it all goes wrong at this point, you can spray the

whole shell black and skip the rest

(Done that before now)

pjyb017.jpg

Sun-dry it, or use a hot air gun, but not so hot as to melt the vinyl window masks

(Done that before too [:I])

pjyb018.jpg

Whist it's drying, make a coffee and photograph bugs [8D]

pjyb019.jpg

If you put the liquid mask on thick enough, it'll come off in one big sheet

Here's some I peeled off earlier

pjyb020.jpg

Make sure you get it all, tends to build up around holes

pjyb021.jpg

Now the fun bit, finding the screw ups [:(]

Didn't spray far enough up the bonnet/hood

pjyb022.jpg

Remasked that area

pjyb023.jpg

And painted a bit more black on

Not great, but it'll do

pjyb024.jpg

Timelapse piccie time;

Yellow coat next, followed by a white coat to brighten the yellow

Backed with black so it looks good thru the windows [;)]

pjyb025.jpg

Big peel-off time

This must be my favourite part of painting, removing the overspray film, and see a nice shiny paintjob

Wish I'd started with a better shell now

pjyb026.jpg

Pick out where to put the decals [;)]

Bit of black 'dust' must have fallen off the mask

Good idea to wash or blow out shell between colours

pjyb027.jpg

Tiny, tiny bleed, hardly worth bothering with

pjyb028.jpg

Eeeesh, big decal needed

pjyb029.jpg

Choices, choices, choices

pjyb031.jpg

Use a 70/30 water/dish-soap solution, to allow decals to slide a bit once placed, especially long or big decals

Once decal is applied, squeegee liquid out with fat thumb

Made the 70/30 bit up, just runny soapy liquid is fine

pjyb032.jpg

Slap 'em on everywhere, being careful to cover the bad bits [;)]

Grill decal is a bit of silver trim decal from a Stadium Blitzer sheet I had kicking around

Headlights are off a Savage sheet

pjyb033.jpg

Bad bits covered nicely

pjyb034.jpg

And the good bits given the treatment too

pjyb035.jpg

pjyb036.jpg

Closeup of the 'grill'

pjyb037.jpg

And some posers [:D]

pjyb038.jpg

pjyb039.jpg

All I gotta do now is fit the lectrics and run it into a tree [8D]

Twinset, That is a cracking guide, would you, or anyone else, have any objections (Chris..?) if I took this and stuck it all into a PDF.

Work out details a bit later when proofs are out of it?

No mate, the kevlar impregnated sheeting cost an absolute fortune - thankfully I got the last two they had - how lucky was that [:D]
