Hello all.

Today i received my shiny new tamiay ta04 !! yipee at last..

anyway it has arrived to me with a fancy looking motor, the only wording on it is "monster of touring 17 turn double".

now ive only got a mtronic eco 27 esc, will this work with this engine?? what budger priced esc would i need to run this 17 turn double motor?

and while im at it what the badword does the turns mean ? and what is different between a double or a single?

Like i say im quite new to electric cars so your help would save me sounding like a complete moron while on the phone to a model shop.

Yo Dazza

the turns dictate the performance of the motor, or summat.

Lower turns gives you a faster car (I think)

If you can get hold of the current rc car action (American mag, available in WH Smiths) they have a good explanation.

If you can't get it, mail me your address and I'll send you a photo copy.

Hey, ive got that, it june 03 right? theres only stuff on petrol engines in there? what pages is it on ? or have you got the older mag.

anyway so what esc would i need to use this 17t x2 motor?? or would my eco27 run it?

I think a quick search in these forums will get you all the answeres you need. [:)] I can tell you one thing: Please don't hook up that 17 turns motor to your Eco ESC, or the ESC might get toasted! [:0] For a better speedo, other will be much better in giving advise on a good one.

If you are not very experienced, you might want to try running it with a standard motor first, will also helps you to get used to the car - or driving a 'real' RC car in general. You can use a standard motor (27 turns) motor with the speedo you have.

Don't worry sounding like a moron when calling a model shop. Most of those guys there will definately know what it feels like to actually BE one... [|)] [:P] LOL

Thanks for that, right im sorted ive ordered myself a 27 turn motor from mdoelsport (great guys actually) and i'll have that tommorow.

The esc that would be needed to run that beast of a motor ( as the shop put it ) would be like 50 quid. Bit much for a car park basher..

for the time being im going to knick the tamiay 540 out of my gf's impreza tl-o1, which i brought and built on saturday. [}:)]

IT depends what motor you bought from the shop. A good 27 stock motor may still fry that eco 27 due to the huge power of the stocks. (Those can rival modified motors easily when geared right)

The eco 27 is designed as a replacement for the silver can motor found in kits as standard. As far a si know it was never designed to handle ANYTHING else. Thats why mtroniks designed that eco 20 for better motors. If it cuts out because of overheating while in use it will be best to stop using that control of use a standard motor. Overheating of the control will seriously reduce its life span. I think it could be the cheapest esc on the market!

Sorry it was an older RCCA, April '03 (Yellow Enzo on front)

I thought it was the latest one as it was still in the bathroom[;)]

Nice toilet reading twinset.. [:0]

anyway ive got all sorted now, i have got a team orion havoc 27t motor, and i have just finished giving it a good run, and what a motor it feels quite a bit faster than my gf's tamiya 540 stock job.

just now i have a problem with the tyres coming of the rims, i know this can be fixed with glue, but i have no use for racing slicks in my house or on my road. off to buy some tyres i am now.

anyone know any decent street tyres for my road?? I used to run hpi radials on my nitro car, so i suppose they would do teh job? or do you know of any better ones?

Thanks

Again

PS - i will post some pics of my new car in my showroom later on today. [:D]

I run HPI x-pattern radials on my M03 mini, and they are way better than the stock Tamiya jobbies. The grip is great, and they seem to last really well running on the somewhat abrasive car-park surface that we use. I guess the touring car equivalents would yield the same results. A bit pricey in the UK though... (got mine off ebay)

How is the Eco27 with your new motor? Does it get very hot? What's the run-time like compared to the kit motor?

Cheers.

the eco 27 gets a bit warm, but only after about 10 mins use. My run times are about 40 minutes. Which is actually no different really to using a stock can. oh yeah im running a sanyo 3000 charged at 5a on a ripmax pro peak delta charger.

the esc makes a funny noise when im going very slow, like a humming noise? is this normal. [?]

Other than that, all is fine - other than my tires, I just used the car, and i have to untangle the rear left tyre from the rear suspension, well at least it didnt ping off down the road.

The price for the tyres you state is 10.99 from modelsport, is this for each, a pair or all four??

At the risk of teaching grandmother to suck eggs, the ESC works by 'pulsing' the current to the motor, with the ratio between 'on' and 'off' determining the speed. I believe that this is the humming/clicking sound that you can hear. My two Eco's as well as my LRP Runner all do it.

As far as I am aware, HPI tyres are priced for pairs - don't forget you'll need inserts as well (I'm really not an expert - others might want to chime in on this...)

The humming noise is normal. the humms get higher when you accelerate, but you can;t hear that (much) as the motor/drivetrainnoise is a lot louder. It also tend to go too high for the human ear to hear. I wonder why dogs start to bark when you run the car on high speed... [;)]

I don't really think you should be charging a 3000 battery on 5 amps though. "These batteries are of the NiMH type and shouldn't be charged on anything more than ???2.8 Amps??? (at least not as high as 5 Amps!), they will overheat due the higher internal resistance compared to NiCd batts. Charging it on too high current will really shorten the battery life, I think other can enlighten you more on this subject. [:)]

I think the new generation cells are ok with this current, plus if you have an adjustable delta peak then just set it low. If you feel the pack getting warm then just stop charging!

Actually at full speed there is no pulsing anymore, only continuous direct current.

The better the ESC the higher its regulating frequency, so an ESC with a high frequency hum on low speeds is better [;)]

Yup, HPI sells all their tyres and wheels by pairs only.

HPI usually provides some foam strips for inserts with the tyres. These aren't as good as molded inserts, available separately.

However HPI seem to have lost favour amongst the racing fashionistas over here. The current preference here for rubber is towards Sorex or TakeOff, also Ride in Asia.

Value depends on the local price so do compare, but TakeOffs are good value over here as they come in either 4-pk with no inserts, or 2-pr with molded inserts for no much more than what HPI or Sorex ask for just tyres alone. (TakeOffs' freebie inserts are actually usable too!)

Also note the difference between 24mm and (old style) 26mm tyre/wheels.

Right, I have now set my charger to 2.5a, glad you guys told me that, i was thinking that the bats were supposed to get warm while on charge. [:I]

Im still hunting the perfect tyre, theres so many to choose from, oh and cos the car car keeps belly slapping any bumps in the tarmac, ive had to raise the ta04, by moving the shocks further in to the centre, thus raising the base. I may have to get a few spares if it still does it. [:(] whoops !!

I will keep you all posted of my tyre choice when i buy them.

Well going by everyone's responces on the humming, if you all have it then it is fine, im happy.

oh ive got my tyres i got a set of the hpi x patterns, and a new set of wheels, only beacuse ive glued the slicks to the tamiya wheels just so that I can drive the car.

and my raised suspension has done the trick, no more belly slapping ! [:)]

id="Verdana">viper racing products have a real good tire that you don't need the foam inserts (new design inside the tire) we race them on asphalt parking lots and don't see any wear on them yet by the way they are sticky to the touch[8D]

So it's not the humming that makes the dogs bark, but the fact that I'm chasing and scaring the **** out of them? [:D]
