I'm not sure where to post this, but I'm sure a mod will move it to the correct forum if I'm wrong.

I got an email this morning pretending to be from Microsoft, it included an 'Update' it looked like a boni fide Microsoft Email, but I was suspicous (and a bed speller)

I checked the emails details and found it did'nt come from Microsoft at all, so I binned it.

10 Minutes later I got 2 more very similar emails, one with a 'patch' attachment and the other had an 'installation' file attached. So my initial hunch was correct, I don't know if they were virus's but they were dodgy. Please be on your guard.

Hi,

I got this from my IT dept today:

"W32/Swen@MM Virus

If anyone gets a window box about the installation of a Microsoft Internet Update Pack. Please contact your local MIS Support IMMEDIATELY for advice as this may be a virus.

Do not respond in anyway to the prompt"

HTH

it was obvious because it came from an address like ndllqsdnbflqsjggdlkhgldsjf5646165@advisor.net

or something. Too bad too many people don't check the address, and still click it.

Microsoft *never* sends patched via email. As I pointed out in this thread:

http://www.tamiyaclub.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=6810

You need to be vigilant. Do *not* EVER open an attachment that you are not 100% sure where it came from.

I will also extend my remarks to advise all of you who have anti-virus software to update your definitions (data) fille for your software *NOW*. And those of you who do not have anti-virus software (shame on you) to get it. Yes it is important.

It is irresponsible in today's world for you to not have anti-virus software on a Windoze computer.

The 4 I have recieved today all show themselves as coming from Microsoft.

Its only when you start looking at the mail header itself and look at the list of servers it's been through that you realise it's a dodgy mail (That and the fact microsoft don't send this type of stuff out)

Just for the record, I wasn't looking for advise but giving folks a warning about it. Not everyone is an IT manager.

When i got my dodgy virus microsoft e-mails they were not at all obvious and were sent from an address like suppot@microsoft.com, asnd it wasn't just a handle/allias....

I did delete them however, and its a good thing to as my hunch proved right and they were viruses...

One thing that needs to be said here is that is is easy to fake/forge a from address. Just about *any* email program can do it. As Wriggle pointed out earlier it is when you look at the headers you see the true origins. While some of us are savvy to these things most folks would not know any better.

Spammers, and now just as often viruses, are sent using bogus or fake/forged email addresses in an effort to cover the real identity of the sender. Using somebody (or company's) email address to mask the true sender and cast the ire of the angry receipient's at an innocent party is called a 'Joe Job'.

My fondest wish is to some day see a spammer and a virus writer set on fire and then put out with an ice pick.

Cheers,

Some programs can even fake those handles, so dont trust anything dodgy ever!, even if you get an email from god@heaven.org! [:D] or should I say better shunsaku.tamiya@tamiya.com ? [;)]

Cheers
