The best stuff is Easy-Off in the yellow can. The blue can easy-off doesn't work either. I don't think easy off brand is sold in the UK though. You want to looks for word like heavy duty in the name. Anything that says "safe for the environment" or "fresh lemon scent" are to be skipped as the paint will only laugh at them.

I've used gasket remover bought at auto parts stores. It's a spray can application like the 'easy off' oven cleaner. It actually works quicker and don't smell as bad as easy off. It's also quite safe on plastic and metal.

in the netherlands, there is also no "easy off" for sale as far i can tell.

And, environmental frindly is usually a other word for "does not work as good as real chemicals" unfortunatly

gasket remover, in removing the <don't know exact translation> the paper/rubber sheets between like a waterpump -> engine body or in between the manifault and the engine ( seal stuff ) ????

I get the feeling that we are not trusted with anything too caustic here in Europe!

Your translation of gasket is fine I think - one online translator I tried suggested 'pakking' as the Dutch word.

i am having a problem removing clear laquer from my Ford Ranger shell. Tried all the usual, and managed to get hold of 'EASY OFF OVEN PAD' comes in a small foam sponge, you pierce the middle with a pin and dab onto your 'oven'.

Is this the same stuff as quoted, comes with lots of warnings etc. Only cost me 79p from the local store, but don't want to wreck the shell. Any comments on this one ?

pakking! now i know exacly fury_dice what it is/should be, thank u.

going to get me a bottle of that stuff to check out what it does.

When i need a "chemical job" get done, i usually try to get my hands on industrial-use stuff. That stuff does what it says on the label. But just don't try to eat it :)

Anyway, kind of a bummer the mussle oven cleaner does not work, i don't even own a 1:1 oven to use it on :) lol

Ok, thats my part for this morning, it's 05:07 here and going to work again.. i should have stayed longer in school! <evil grin>

I use Castrol SUPER CLEAN degreaser,in the purple jugg.

I simply pour 3 or 4 gallons into a 5 gallon bucket and let the body parts soak for a few days.

I have done this more than 20 times and everytime the parts come out smooth and clean with little to no effort.

I would not try this with lexan body parts, but for standard Tamiya plastic bodies, its the only choice for me!

I have had mixed results with Castrol super clean. On some paints it takes the paint right off. On others it has no effect. I guess your mileage may vary

Brake fluid, gasket remover (spray can) and Easy Off oven cleaner all work pretty well in my experience. But since brake fluid and gasket remover are univeral around the world, perhaps they could be easier for our European friends to obtain.

just cleaned some monster beetle wheels with brake fluid, leave to soak in a jar, next day the old paint is floating on the top

wipe excess off , wash with soapy water

very clean

bought Loctite 7200 "decapjoint" (green spraycan)

used for the first try my subaru brat body, really works fine. I must say, smells chemical! lol

but, first spray took the mayor of the first and 2e layer of paint. Cleaned that up, now have sprayed the 2e layer on. let see what happends but the promises are good.

(and, also for sale in the netherlands.. for u dutch out there, the Brezan has it)

Gasket remover is kind of like Easy Off oven cleaner. Both are fairly strong stuff. They work pretty good at removing paint but don't leave them on the plastic for too long. Unlike brake fluid which plastic body can soak in it for long hours, gasket remover and Easy Off need to be used with caution.

On the easy off pad I used - I left it on until it dried. I left it on for 30mins, didn't seam to be doing much or removing laquer from my Ford Ranger shell. Left it for another 1/2 hour - but still didn't remove much, just lifted edges only. Eventually as I didn't want to damage shell I washed it off. Didn't work for me [:(] - but it just depends on what it's painted in originally. I can confirm it didn't damage my shell[:)]

On the packet it said overnight (for an oven) but didn't want to risk that for a plastic shell).

Just another oven cleaner report; S.C. Johnson & Sons Mr Muscle really does work well with sprayed lexan bodies. I just stripped two by letting it sit for less than an hour and then scraping (!) off the paint - no damage to the Tamiya lexan from 1989.

Also tried xlyene (marketed as good for removing decals while being kind to PVC) which dissolved the paint alright but also instantly fogged up the lexan really bad (seems like the lexan dissolves as well as the surface becomes soft/sticky/fogged).

The other day I dropped some paint stripper on my sand scorcher shell, it took the paint straight off no problem along with the plastic. The nice grille detail on the back is in need of some serious attention.[:(][:(]

I used Modelstrip. And it didn't touch the paint at all. Brake fluid is fine though. Modelstrip states that it won't remove automotive paint, and I assume that the 6 previous paintjobs on my Monster Beetle must have been auto paint then.

Also, I've seen a few posts which praise Modelstrip and oven cleaner as a safe solution if you have kids - well, they aren't. They contain caustic, which is highly dangerous and can cause serious chemical burns, even when heavily diluted. So you should keep ALL paint stripping solutions away from the little 'uns. See here for some more info, or search Google for sodium hydroxide.

If you want a cheap supplier of brake fluid, have a word with your local friendly garage. I've just got a gallon of it for nothing, as they have a whole barrel for the brake fluid drained out of cars being serviced. It may have a slight moisture content, but it's fine for body stripping [:D]
