I am looking for a new pistol grip radio. My local hobby shop has a JR, I don't remember the model number, for $95. Its an AM and has a ESC. What do you guys recomend?

I have had very good luck with JR and Hitec. I have had issues with Futaba. Of course YMMV. It is likely you will get as many complaints as raves for any brand of radio.

Same here.

We stick to Futaba (good for lower end) and

KO (great on the high end stuff) only because

that's what our family has been using all along.

With pistols, best to test it in your hand.

Some ppl with large hands or chubby fingers do not like

the KO EX1 and need to get something else.

I have personally only ever used JR, Futaba and KO.

I now have a JR R-1 Limited, and a KO Mars as a backup.......probably selling that.

For my sport radio I have a JR Cobra. JR quality is second to none - go with it if it is from you LHS - as they are selling it - and will be able to offer spares and service.

As an interesting side not - JR and KO were once the same company - owned by the Kondo Brothers !! They split - as they had different paths planned, one Aircraft and one car/boat.

Funny how both now do the same thing - equally as well. LOL [;)]

Cheers

The Hitec Lynx system is a good mid-priced stick radio. Takes a beating as well.

There is also a good deal on ebay where a nib futaba magnum is shipped to your door for 40$. Same seller has that deal quite frequently.

Sounds like the base XR2 model?

Nothing wrong with that, but be aware there's a "new" XR2i

out now. Does the same job but someone said that comes

with better servo/s - best to check beforehand.

In any case, if an ESC is indeed provided, US$95 is a steal.

Thanks Willy, I'll take a look.

stay away from Hitec. buy cheap, buy twice.

KO, JR, Futaba, and Sanwa/Airtronics all make great radios. If your budget allows, buy an FM as radio equipment can last you quite a while before you would need to move onto a newer one. If you need a good radio with ESC, check out Futaba or Sanwa's lineup as they usually has a set that would include an ESC.

Could not agree more Icon !

I always advise new comers and and all people alike to spend as much as they are capable of on Radio systems and speed controls. As the radio gear is the most important part of your car, as it issomething that will last alot longer than your car. If you buy well and spend your dollars on quality products, you will have a radio / speedy that will last many many years and be usefull in all your cars.

I think that some Hitec gear is fine, they do cover the mid to high end stuff as well as the cheap gear.

It's always worth spending as much as poss on a tranny though, like a good quality tool it will outlast cheap items many times over, and will probably cost less in the long run.

[8D]The JR XR 2 and now 3 are good middle range radios. I agree with the comment about HI-TEK. I have a ESC from them that came with a car I bought, and it has shown itself to be a dog. I have, on the other hand, good luck with Futaba, especialy the Mag. Juniors. Make sure it fits your hand or no amount of features will make up for a poor fit. Last, if you can pay the price, go FM. Much more stable and less directional. ESC's are like radios, you pretty much get what you pay for. If you are going to bash about the back yard, an inexpensive one will do. If you are serious, then it will be forward only, and very very little resistance. Best of luck, with the improvements and the prices dropping, you really can't go wrong![;)]
