Hey guys just wondering if anyone could give me some tips on a good first R/C car to get. Im thinking of an on road car, which would be better a TT01 or a TL-01?? Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanx

It all depends on how much you want to spend really.

The TL-01 chassis is a very good if basic piece of kit.

The TT-01 and TB-01 are also very good and not too different in appearence.

If you want to upgrade the standard kit then have a look at the TB-02 chassis as it already has a few hop-up goodies from the factory.

Oh of course there is also the choice of which model you want as most of the touring cars/rally cars are available as a TL-01's The other chassis's choices are a bit limited at the moment, but there's nothing stopping you getting the bodykit.

I currently race a TL-01 Scooby it's got virtually ALL the hop-ups available and a 13x2 mmotor in it, it goes like badword, has been rolled all ways possible, rammed from all directions basically it's been thrashed mercilessly and as yet nothing has broken!!

Can't say much about the others as I've only just got a TT-01 kit but no doubt someone here will say something about them!![;)]

I'd say TB01 over TL01 as the TB01 is more robust for a beginner and also has superior design generally.

The TL01 breaks easily, I've had enough of them break on me to assure you of that! A slight offset impact on the wheels will break the lower suspension mounts on the chassis which will mean an entire new chassis and rebuilding the car from scratch.
TB01 also comes with better dirt protection.
Only thing going for the TL01 is inexpensive and easy to get parts for.
The TB01 while not a proper off roader can be used on dirt surfaces and gravel whereas the TL01 can't.
You may be better going for a buggy though as the they are generally much more robust than touring car chassis and can be used on all surfaces including tarmac. A touring car chassis will limit your driving to large open areas of tarmac so it depends on where you intend to use the car. As it is your first car you will almost certainly spend alot of time crashing and breaking things - so best advice is whatever car you do chooose make sure it is current model and has lots of spares available for it. Ideally check which makes and models your local model shop stocks. Nothing worse than buying a car, driving it for 5 minutes and breaking something and then having to wait for a week until a new part arrives!

Hey Justin,

Welcome to the club-good to see you here, out of the two would go for TT01 for starter due to the price (RTR £150 - Kit+all bits ready to run £160) the TB02 - is £165 for the kit only, all the other bits you have to buy seperately Jacking the price up to about £220-£230 if you buy it as a deal. As you know I have the TB02, which is a good car, although the TT01 would be great for beginning.

The TT01 also has a lower centre of Gravity, which is better and lots of Hop Ups are available. The TB01 is also a great chassis, although quite heavy I believe??? sill would take a good thrashing.

You still thinking about the Blue Integra????

Cheers

Nah im not thinking about the Integra any more! I was thinking about a TL-01 Toms Castrol Supra but after mud4fun's post (thanks mud4fun[8D]) i probably wont. If i can get the cash i will probs go for a TB01 or 02. What do you think?

Thanks

They are both excellent chassis, the TB02 is simply a souped up TB01 chassis using higher quality components to overcome some of the 'play' in the '01 steering linkages etc. The '02 is more biased towards dry road conditions as it is quite exposed bathtub, the '01 is more weatherproof with its lexan dustcover. I have built and owned both and can vouch for their robustness. Yes, they are a heavy chassis so aren't quite as quick as race spec touring cars but for a beginner you probably don't need outright speed. I believe parts are still readily available for TB01 chassis too. (Many parts are interchangeable with TG10 I seem to recall, in fact I'm sure most of the suspension and gearbox parts I got were actually TG10 parts)

I think I would probably go for the TB01 to start with rather than the TB02, as these are as Mud4Fun says, very rhobust and very weatherproof, when compared to other chassis, due to a cover (often a car interior, that goes over the chassis). They are also cheaper than the TB02 and are more tolerant to less flat surfaces such as gravel. Some of the later models also had "Ball races" which are really an essential hop up anyway, so represent good value for money.

The TB02 is a very nice car, although maybe quite alot of dosh for a first car, which often sees the curb a few times, with TB01 parts protected and cheap to replace in the unlikley event something does actually break. - You can pick up a TB01 kit from http://www.dms-racing.com for between £120 and £150 which isn't bad at all.

The Supra is a good looking car but has very low ground clearance according to goldstar, so would need to run on-road, probably on flat tarmac...

you can always make a budget training bumper from

some isolation tube.

Bought at the local building market, the stuff u stuff over water tubes to isolate them.

Just cut a piece off, stuff it over the front and/or rear bumper.

'e voila! and when wrecked, just cut off a new piece

(yeah, a cheapo dutchy here [;)] )

But i am shur there are some foams to be bought for this kit

np!

stole the idea from a car i bought in a lot, hey, better a good rip-off then a bad new idea.

reading my last post.... 3 times stuff in one sentince, ehmm.. i need to inprove my dictionary of words [:I]

but, check the writing time.. i do have a excuse [8D]

mmmm...

why not fist buy a rtr from a member? usually offered freqeuntly some nice onroad cars. cheaper then buying new and finding out "i would prefer offroad better" .... -cheapo dutch mode off>

why not go for a twin detonator, unbreakeble, powerfull, goes anywhere.. ow, and decent priced also..

just a tought...

or get a f103 , and see how fast u can kill it [}:)]

i know.. last comments not really usefull! just tired.. lol

Yes, good idea Stefan. buying a used car cheaply would give you an idea of how they drive etc. I have owned over 200 Tamiya cars and only 5 of them were bought new in box, the rest were bought 2nd hand or built from spare parts.

The advantage with buying new for a beginner though is that they come as complete packages including the radio, batteries and chargers etc which most of us more experienced users will have plenty of already.
One thing to remember is that unlike QD cars, the proper tamiya kits allow most shells to be fitted to most chassis. You don't have to restrict yourself to one type of chassis just because you like a specific shell. It may be better to buy a 2nd hand chassis more suited to your needs and buy a new shell that you like to fit to it. For example the TB01 chassis will accept virtually all TL01 bodyshells etc, etc.
What sort of budget are you talking about? and what equipment do you already have? If you drop me an email I may be able to sort you out with a TL01 chassis built from new parts. In fact for the price I suspect your looking at paying for a package (approx £120) I could probably build you a new TL01 car AND a thundershot buggy as well - best of both worlds!!! [:D]
