I recently purchased a Futaba 2PL radio. It came with a 75mhz crystal. In the manual it clearly states that it does support 27mhz crystals aswell. However when I tried to put in a 27mhz crystal it did not work.

Is there a reason for this?

I'm pretty new to rc, so if someone can help me I would really appreciate it.

Futabas are available in different bands depending on where you bought it. It could well be a 75Mhz model from US.

You cannot change bands just by putting a different xtal in, 75Mhz to 27Mhz is much too big a jump. You can use only 75.xxxMHz xtals in that radio.

Yeah, I bought it in the US. And I'm trying to use it in South Africa. That sucks! So there is no way I can use a 27mhz crystal in it?

Nope, the sets for 75, 27 and 40MHZ have slightly different tuned circuitry inside them to work in the specific frequency. You'll have to pop it onto Ebay for the US market as they use 75 (75 is illegal in the UK, and I think in Europe too?)

If you knew what you're doing you could get it retuned to 27Mhz, but that'll be just about rebuilding/reengineering the entire RF section.

(On some radios there is an changeable RF module, but the 2PL is not one of those radios.)

It'll be more cheaper & easier to buy a whole new radio.

Is there something stopping you from using 75Mhz there?? [:D]

yes, banned here, but perfect to use , nobody has it, no interferense with some high power truck radio.. like on the overused 27mhz.

35 & 40 are here for rc airplane's and choppers, but (here local anyway) also good to use, no rc clubs in a large radius [:(]

like willychang .. ehm, said.. i would use the set anyway, it is not like you are running a illegal radio station with 1000'se of watt's tx power. "catch risk" is minimal, well.. about zero" . Here in the netherlands anyway.

If u want to make shur, find a frind who has a scanner, and check out the freq. u have for a while, u will soon find out if any threath is on your freq. there.

Thanks. I just don't understand why the manual says that the radio supports 27mhz. 75mhz is ilegal in South Africa. I think I'm just going to order some 75mhz crystals over the web and use the radio anyway.

There are 4 frequencies allocated for models in the UK and they are;

27mhz -26.960 up to 27.280

35mhz -35.945 up to 35.305

40mhz -40.660 up to 41.000

459mhz -458.500 up to 459.500

These are the only LEGAL frequencies available.

35mhz is ONLY for flying models

40mhz is ONLY for surface based models

27 and 459 can be used for any models

According to the info I read you can only use 35 and 60 mhz in South Africa!!
