Hey guys, feel a bit stupid asking this [:I] but how does breaking work on an RC car with an ESC?? lol

Electric motors turn when you apply power, but they also act

like generators - they provide power if you turn them.

The ESC simply shorts the motor out... if the motor is turning

then the "back EMF" generated will act against the revolution

and the motor stops turning.

The energy is dissipated as heat in the motor, circuit &

ESC's brake FETs.

What about those ESC's that put the power 'gained' by braking (partially) back to the battery pack? Does that really exist, and will it increase runtime? Or is the ammount gained so low that it's insignificant? [?]

If they really do so, runtime increase won't be insignificant at moderate braking, but think you can achive hard braking only by wasting the energy at the ESC.

Guys, I noticed in all the testing I've been doing that using a smaller pinion also helps braking. I'm not sure why but the same ESC will brake much more effectively with a much smaller pinion. Could this be that the gearing is acting as a brake? ie. small pinion makes it easier for motor to turn wheels but makes it harder for wheels to turn motor? so under no power the wheels have to slow down as they can't turn the motor as easily as if larger pinion fitted? I confess I have no idea of what is happening other than it seems to work like that?!*

i just had a little think, now if the motor is turning faster because it has a smaller pinion, it will be generating more power when the car is rolling, so when its shorted it will be generating more power to cause a more powerful breaking affect.

ive never heard the theory on this breaking feature before so i really dont have a clue what im talking about!!!! [8D]

i thought that made sence when i wrote it, but its nice to see you guys put into into proper terms!

i tell you whats the best for of breaking thow, (well at least it looked cool [:P]) ---

it was these big 1/6 scale nitro buggies with front and back disc breaks on each wheel,

they looked so cool[:P]

well i havent got an esc, but if i'm running my pumpkin and i need to slow down, i just slam it into reverse [:)]

clod buster doesnt like that much though because it ends up on its nose!
