Just some friendly advice. If any of you have tried to clean paint off polycarbonate bodies or are going to try to do it with Costic Soda, DONT!!!!!!!!! Ive just spent 2 hours in the emergency room at a hospital, having my eye flushed out with 1 litre of sodium chloride, and trust me on this one, a drop stings like ****. It is the worst, and most painfull thing i have ever experienced!!! dont do it... Just some advice

I've come across quite a few postings which point out the virtue of oven cleaners and other solutions based on caustic as a safe and non toxic alternative to brake fluid, and have pointed out many times the fact that it is highly dangerous, nasty stuff. There's no such thing as a safe paint stripper IMO..

Sorry to hear about your splash; once I got a tiny bit of exhaust paste in my eye, which I believe contained caustic, and that was a hospital job too; it's amazing how much they have to flush through your eye to stabilise the chemical.

Also, many people don't realise that if you get this stuff on your skin, you need to flush with water for at least 10 minutes, or it will just carry on burning you. Oh, and it can be explosive when combined with water (that's the super-duper-ultra caustic though, I don't think oven cleaner is concentrated enough to explode)

Hope you feel okay now fasterthebetter, better save up for some safety goggles!

You have to use your noodle when it comes to using Easy off and caustic soda. Make sure your in a well ventilated area. This stuff will make you gag.

Make sure to wear rubber gloves and a long sleeve shirt and pants. Just a drop on your skin will eat a hole in you. I have a scar on my fore arm to prove it.

Wear some eye protection. a cheap $3.99 set of safety glasses costs less than a visit to the hospital.

Yeah, well how thas about R35, not too much but id rather save it for something rc, just kidding. i have recovered, with an eye patch... and cant judge distance with it on my one eye, so i cant really drive very well right now...[:I]

Isn't that what oldtimers use to saponify fat into soap too?

Boil caustic soda with a slab of lard/tallow and the bits that

remain is soap.

It don't differentiate much between pork & beef fat, or human.

Sorry to read about Your accident, Fasterthebetter.

We've had some discussion of this, causticsoda, and everybody says it's dangerous...

There's a topic here, "how to get rid of paint...", where it clearly states the using of causticsoda needs a lot of causion.

But, what made the "explosion"?

I freqvently use 99,9% pure NaOh, both for paint-removal and to clean our toilet, shower, owen, etc., and never run into trouble.

Also we used the stuff at chemistry-classes back in school, and I can't remember any accident's.

Still, sorry to read about all the accident's...

Maybe it's better to use something else, instead?...

All the best to You all,

Jakob

Umm, it might be a stupid question, but if u use that for u r body ( car body ) and i hurts so much, (burns??)

WOulded it damage the Body itsself...? because its sounds like some pretty rough stuff (or how you call it lol)

Hi all,

this is my final saying in this topic...

NaOh is great for removing paint.

If You don't be aware of the danger involved; don't use the stuff...

If You' re intelligent and use the stuff properly, there's little danger involved.

When using caustic chemicals, like NaOh, or brakefluid, there's always an element of danger.

Be a man, if You don't know the correct procedure involved, DON'T USE IT!!!

How hard can it be?

Are all US and UK people stupid?

When using chemicals, in any way, it's kind of dangerous!

Pour a litre of NaCl, SALT, on Your food and then try to eat it????

Grow up, use chemicals with the proper precautions, and there's no, or little, danger to it...

Jakob, I think you are being rather patronising there. The issue is that a lot of people are not aware that caustic in oven cleaner and brake fluid are dangerous, and this is a reminder to them to take care when using it. People in the US and UK aren't stupid at all, there are people in every country who are not aware of the nature of these chemicals, they simply haven't been told or discovered it yet, so this forum/topic is an ideal way to educate them.

Oh, and whatever it was that my Monster Beetle was painted with, it resisted brake fluid, caustic and graffiti remover. In the end, good old fashioned wet and dry paper in progressively finer grades got it out, but that still leaves me to polish the clear windscreen part with toothpaste to get the scratches out [B)] (or perhaps I will just blow a coat of clear over it, that would be quicker and simpler).

Scratshes? Can u remove em??? How?? Please tell me :D

id="quote">id="quote">

http://www.tamiyaclub.com/xforum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=12714 covers using toothpaste. I had to resort to wet and dry on the screen of the Monster Beetle as nothing would shift the paint. Started with 1800 grade (quite fine) then 2000 (extremely fine). This leaves a dull finish to the window. Followed up with some smokers toothpaste powder, and then cheap value toothpaste, that got it nice and smooth and shiny. It's quite a lot of work though, I've only done a small part of the screen and it took hours, so that's why I'm thinking of putting some clear paint on it to smooth out the finish...

Sorry, It came on harder than was ment to...[:I]

It was just some of the stuff I' ve read here...

Of course one makes mistakes if not been told the right way " how to..."

This IS a perfect forum for learning, I have no excuse writing what I did...

[:I] Sorry once again...

Been stupid myself using caustic soda;

I had a Ambassadeur baitreel, and wanted to paint it in an another color. Put the whole reel into a jar with c.soda, forgetting the reel' s made of aluminium.

Exit baitreel!!! [:(]

LOL

The white stuff is oxide? That's left on the plastic body?

Read some saying toothpaste works...

My apologies for the previous reply, really, I am a nice guy, I just lost it for awhile...

[:I]

Still, all the best, hope You guys didn't get too upset about it. If You did, write, in anger, back to me. I deserve it.

Hey jakob, no worries mate, it's easy to get over-enthusiastic, not so easy to apologise publicly, so all respect to you for that [^].

As for toothpaste, see the other "toothpaste" topic for my findings. I've found it works okay within certain limitations.

Sorry to hear about that fasterthebetter.

Yeah you gotta watch that caustic, especially `round the eyes[8D]. I used to work for a company that made computer circuit boards. Caustic is a bad one, but ammonia. I worked on a machine that ran on it, I got a face full one day. Three days later I was back at work. It blinds you,(briefly) and takes the air out of your lungs. (briefly)

Also if you make the mixture of caustic too hot, you end up with a big plastic blob on the floor[:(]
