For general fun use no, but for racing at a fairly serious club level, yes, because the transmitters allow all sorts of set up adjustments and multi model memory also good servos are much stronger and faster than budget ones.

There is NO substitute for setting up the car itself tho!

I've got a mid-range radio which has a 10 model memory and some adjustments (end point, steering rate) and find it really useful for running many different models. It's not got all the features of some of the high price radios, but it's very handy to have all the different setups remembered, and the end point is useful for stopping the steering servos being strained.

Better servos tend to be faster and/or stronger, but again I don't go for the highest price in my Tamiya runners, I go for ones which cost a little more than the cheapo ones as I find they last and perform better.

Would that be the 2PL Futaba?

I have the 2PL and find the 10 car memory excellent as most meets seem to consist of 6 or more cars with me! (Clumber park here I come)

id="quote">id="quote">That's the one [:)]. Top set for the money I think, it doesn't have too many frills, but has enough of them to be useful, and it's got a nice quality feel to it as well.

Shame they don't do the equivalent in a stick radio though, as I still prefer the sticks for offroaders.

I gotta revisit this thread...

I found that my father-in-law's Toyota Hi-Lux, that uses an ESC has a considerable delay when going into reverse. This is particularly annoying when hitting a wall or something. I'm not that familiar with ESC, but is this a standard characteristic, or is it a cheapo?

I think its fairly standard - gives your gearbox/motor a chance. However, if the ESC is set up correctly, it should probably have a brake function - ie if you hit reverse while it's still going forwards, it should slow the motor without going into reverse. I'm no expert though...
