Slip Rings

Just got a Mtroniks marine motor. Has a steel band around the can. Apparently this slip ring increases torque and reduces rpm. Can anyone explain how this works [?]

As far as I understand it just increases the magnetic field about the armature.

The ring concentrates the magnetic field inside the can. By keeping the magnetic field inside the can the motor generates more torque, but the rpm is reduced as the armature has to turn through the stronger magnetic field which takes more effort.
