Garvey, what charger are you using? With a peak charger your battery should never need to be left on trickle charge.

That sounds like an AC30(?) which is not a peak charger. On the half hour fast charge I don't think it would fully charge an 1800 stick pack. Try an overnight trickle charge and see if it improves the runtime, but best of all would be to invest in a peak charger. A peak charger will detect when the pack is fully charged, rather than just charging it for a set amount of time, so your pack will be charged to full capacity. Trickle charging packs tends to give you longer runtime but not so much "punch" (the car will not be as fast if the pack is trickle charged, but will keep going for longer).

Peak chargers can be got for anything from £30 upwards, the Pro Peak Varipulse is a good entry level one, and it will give your batteries a much better charge than a timed charger. If you also get a discharger, that will help the life of niCd cells, which should be fully discharged before recharging them in order to stop the memory effect, which is where niCd cells stop taking a full charge if they've been undercharged too many times..
