Hello![?]

I´m new on this and i will like to know how to improve the speed on my Mini Cooper because i had no idea of how to do it.

The only thing i had on my car its the electronic speed control from Futaba MC230CR, the engine it´s the stock who comes whith it which also i don´t know how many turns had and what it this mean, more turns its faster?

I hope someone can help me with this.[:D]

Best regards from sunny Cancún

Hi Jorge,

You'll need to find out how many turns your ESC is rated for if you want to try out a stronger motor in your Mini. The number of turns means as I understand it basically how quickly the motor revs. The lower the # of turns, the quicker the motor is the way it works. But some gearboxes and other such parts don't hold up to a stronger engine, so it's good to ask around what your vehicle will stand up to :)

Standard Tamiya "silver can" motors I think are rated in the upper 20somethings, but I'm not certain the exact number, so I won't guess at one, someone will be able to tell you the exact number :) You could also give the search function a try, it often helps.

Good luck ;)

The Tamiya motors are 27 turn and fairly slow. You could upgrade to a 27 turn rebuildable stock motor, which would be a lot quicker, but some of the cheaper ESC's won't handle it.

Also, try changing the pinion for a larger one. I think that the standard on the mini is 18T but you can change it to a 20T. This would increase top speed, but at the expense of acceleration.

Before anything else though, if your car doesn't have ballraces installed, you should do that - it's the first step to getting more speed and is an essential hopup if you plan to upgrade the motor.

Agree with Jozza,

Your ESC will support up to 20 turn motor, so I would recommend going for a #53068 RS540 Sport Tuned Motor (23 Turn) for your first upgrade.

I'm quite positive the standard kit comes with a 20T pinion set - check your manual.

First step though is definitely a full ball bearing set. You can buy a Mr Bear M03 set (BEA3) for £13.99 at http://www.goldstarstockists.com .

Found quite a good link on overall setup, although based on MO3L still applies:

How it works with turns & winds:

Lower number of turns means more speed

Lower number of winds means less torque but more speed. Motors with more winds will drain less power.

I have a mini myself and I think a nice motor to use with it is a 19*1. This will make sure your car will not have too little traction and it should give nice and long driving time.

if you have the real need for speed go with 6-9 turn motors. dont worry about your esc and driveterrain. esc is underratted and can handle it.also torque kills the driveterrain but low turn motors lack torque, they just have amazing high end

I would strongly disagree! A Mini with anything below a 17 would be nigh on uncontrollable plus suffer from massive tyre wear. Also an MC230 would die running that type of motor, as has been said, go for a sports tuned or 27 stock.

i had a mini before with a 13 turn motor in it and its not uncontrolable, but your right about balding tires, but that takes a mounth to notice, just get front slicks.

It may have been ok in a straight line but I bet it was lousy in corners! Given the wrong surface and plenty of low speed acceleration you could probably eat tyres a lot faster as well, I know I did.
