Hello guys, I have a tt-01 running an LRP Big Block, which gives lots of torque, but it also makes the plastic spur gear of my car wear out really fast.

Should I just upgrade it to a speed tuned gear set, as it has enough torque for that, will that stop the problem? or is there any kind of metal spur available for tt-01 chassis?

Any ideas or opinions welcome.

Metal spur gears are basically non-existant for electric cars as they increase wear on the pinon. I think the problem could be the pinion itself, the stock one is aluminium and wears pretty quickly even on a plastic spur. Check to see of the teeth are spikey or rounded, if spikey I'd buy a replacement steel pinion from RW racing.

I have a pet theory on this - I believe that because the motor (and therefore pinion) spins faster than anything else in the car, the grease gets thrown off it and gradually takes all the grease off the spur and throws this around the casing too - and this is why the two parts wear so quickly. If you regrease the pinion and spur every 6 to 8 batteries it seems to reduce wear quite a bit on a TT01 and a massive amount on a TL01. Bit like a 6000 mile oil change I suppose...

Ah Ha!!! Finally some one who agrees that it is possible!! I sugguested this theroy a little while ago as a mate was having this prob in a tt01 but he was also using incorrect pitched gears at the same time... incredible noise. I also was trying to create a viscus lsd in the rear of my car, by packing it fairly full of grease but what i found that when i eased on the power out of a corner it was great, If i punched it the rear end would step out... We beleive that by having that volume of grease when the diff spun up quickly it was throwing it the back and the weight shift combined with the diff being fully locked at this point was causing me to spin out. What do you guys think?? Am i crazy or is this a possible cause??

Not convinced that the grease shifting around would have that much effect, but certainly with it all lubed up you'd have no wear.

I'd quite like to see a oil bath gear train on a RC - with a little sump full of oil, a little drain plug and....

(where did those men in the white coats come from?)

Old Kyosho Scorpion series had something like an oil bath at its gearbox [8D], if it kept the oil is another story [8)]

Mr_Pushrods theory is sound though, having run a TT01 for a while the standard aluminium pinions wear very badly and in turn damage the spur gear. If you look at the pinion you will see that it looks like a saw tooth, resembling a circular saw blade!

The lubrication issue is interesting as I can understand that centrifugal force may throw the grease off the pinion/spur but having raced for many years with many cars I have never greased the spurs or pinions and have never experienced wear like the TT01.

Simple answer change aluminium pinion for a steel one and your wear will reduce, thats what I did with mine and the spur is still as good now as it was when I fitted it a few months back. And I dont use any lubrication on them.
