my volvo 850 touring car has a 540 motor what is the biggest motor i can fit and also, with it being front wheel drive which tyres will last the longest?

The two things are pretty much mutually exclusive - more powerful motors are going to accelerate tyre wear.

Saying that, the physical size of the motor is fairly irrelevant - you can get very powerful 540 sized motors, but you also need to make sure your ESC can handle the extra power...

What ESC do you have?

On a FWD I wouldn't go less then 17-19T, get a good stock 17, 19, 23 or 27 turn motor, from Tamiya for example the Super Stock RZ (23T) (of course only a motor that your ESC supports)

If you use hard tires for low wear then you will have even more slip and will be able to enjoy only "lame" motors, as motor power doesn't bring you anything if you can't transfer it on the road.

Cheers
